BoC-what's the big deal?

Just bought the "Somewhere Out In The Country" ep based on
all the insane praise for it.

What a huge dissapointment. Never heard such sterile,
simple, amaturish, and REPTITIVE "idm" in my life. Sheeesh!

Geogaddi is good, mind. Nice album (well, some of it.)

Well, there's no pleasing some people :)

Personally I think it's a fantastic little ep.

give it time.. you might start spotting things in it that
you didnt on first listen.

surely you're not saying that the ONLY way to appreciate boc
is under the influence?

Yup no pleasing some people. That says it exactly.

I got a In A Beautiful Place Out In The Country just a few
days ago as well, and even though I heard it back when it
came out, I still love it.

It should be Squarepusher or Venetian Snares what's the big
deal? :] Anyway, yeah give the album time, though 'Kid For
Today' is their best song IMO. I dunno, it's a nice album
to relax to.

REPTITIVE

Oh, and, yes, music without snare rushes all over the place
is boring.

i'd disagree with you on squarepusher. n my opinion he HAS
produced some great tracks.

i havent heard enough of snares to be convinced either way
yet.

I like slow ambient stuff too. But the constant boring beat
against a constant repeated three chord phrase with the odd
melody fragment once in a while just wears thin imo.

Not only boring, but unintelligent. That is why he put "idm"
in quotes. Clever.

No, I put it in quotes accidently.

And I love the title track, it's haunting.
I just hate the rest.

im not deriding or denying the pleasure derived from doing
so.
but ive met a lot of people who can only get into certain
kinds of music when theyve taken one drug or another.. to me
that indicates that either : they don't really
appreciate/like the music itself
or.. its not actually very good music - hence the ony way to
endow it with any positive qualities is to get twisted.

I don't get it...

liking ambient

and hating this E.P.??

It's not strictly ambient I admit but it's so easy to chill
out to I don't really see any huge difference.

Me love this E.P. long time.

I don't like venetian snares at all though. I just have a
load of his albums as mp3. The reason for this is simple: I
am a twat

i agree on that completly!
amo bishop roden is one of my favourite boc tunes. i enjoyed
it a lot when i got it, but when i listened to it when being
stoned the whole thing sounded even way better. there's
quite some music out there that sounds better under
influence, iabpoitc is just one of the best examples for
this. i lost a little interest in boc lately, but when i get
stoned it's still one of favourite things to play.

for me, when you put boc on - its just there (if that makes
ense?)
it doesnt demand your attention. you dont have to actively
listen to it the way you do with some other music.
it sort of crashes against your conciousness like waves on
rocks (hahaha sounds like im trying to be poetic) & suddenly
you realise its there & that youre hearing something in the
track you never noticed before.

offline CS2x from London (United Kingdom) on 2004-01-22 17:55 [#01044822]

By ambient, I mean soundscapes like Steve Roach's stuff or
Amber style ambient.

I just don't see the appeal of this bar the haunting title
track, and the first one is okay (but I loose interest half
way through.)

If they removed the simple beats and concerntrated on adding
some more melodies over the repeated chords and some
interesting atmospheric sounds or whatever, I'd probably
like it more.

well, the answer is simple

write some better music, become as famous as BoC, and show
us bitchezs how its done.

excellent answer Zeus.

I love the EP, its percfetc imo.

All I would give all the tracks a 4 out of 5 the tracks. All
of them tracks have a purpose.

I cant understand why anyone could hate this EP, everyone I
played it to like it, even those who hate this type of
music.

Repetitive???? well, thats the purpose, I dont want to chill
to snares, u know.

I'd say listen to it through headphones before you finally
give up on it. I personally think it's a golden nugget. But
it's a matter of taste.

I can understand why people may like it.
Note-can people stop with the Squarepusher and VSnares
comments? Just because I don't like one boring (imo)
chillout cd doesn't mean all I listen to is crazy drill n
bass. I like a lot of ambient stuff too.

As for Zeus' comment-firsltly I can say I find something
reptetitive and boring WITHOUT being able to make something
better, it's an opinion, and secondly, I think plenty of the
stuff I've heard people here do is more interesting then
that EP.

i agree with CS2X. i loved MHTRTC, i mean freakin' loved
it. i was hugely and still am disappointed with the
'beatufiul place..' ep. to me it represents a huge step
backwards in terms of rythymic and melodic complexity. i
thought they had lost it after this ep and was quite nervous
about the quality that 'geogaddi' would be. to my elated
joy that nervousness was all unfounded. 'geogaddi' is one
of my top five favorite albums of all time. the production
and programming shames 'mhtrtc'. these boys have mad
skills. i like to think that 'in a beautifull place...' was
just meant to be a holdover for the fans while the album was
being completed. almost like a prerelease b-side ep.

I allso quite enjoy boc, but it is so dream like that i feel
that i have to listen to it when i'm totally wasted, then i
could find the next "dimension" in theyr music.

I have to say that i really enjoy 'iabpoitc' allso some
'geogaddi' tracks, but some of those tracks are just freaky,
but still i like those. I should give it a extra listen.
