I've never understood the amounts people are charged for
this sort of thing... 150,000 dollars for one fucking song?
I could understand if I downloaded the same song 150
thousand times, but seriously no way in hell is one track
ever worth even remotely that much. Fuck the RIAA.

I think that's statutory damages, not compensatory, i.e.
it's completely unrelated to the actual financial damage you
did. $150,000 per work is the maximum amount allowed by the
relevant law, and of course they're going to demand maximum
damages for maximum intimidation.

(Solution: launching deadly mutant spider-slug robot rockets
at Hillary Rosen and all her cohorts and anybody else
involved in similar actions elsewhere.)

Depends on whether or not you're downloading material that
falls under the "jurisdiction" of RIAA; if you're not , then
there's nothing to worry about.

There's always Peer Guardian though, but it eats system
resources and it's generally unstable.. so..

the riaa probably doesn't give a shit about VSnares or
Autechre, only the artists who make them a lot of money.
actually not the artists, just the money

handoverthecart > maybe but do you think they will check
what you're downloading/sharing? ' _ '

if you're sharing 10'000 mp3s, they won't check what the
mp3s are...

(by the way, do they still aim mostly at sharers, or do they
aim simple downloaders now?)

Gwely: why the hell would you get rid of KAZAA man? first
off get SOULSEEK! its way better!. WAY WAY WAY better....
and secondly this law that they are suing people with is
only applicable in America and possible somewhere in europe,
NOT CANADA. have no fear.

i read somewhere that they just search for a few popular
artists and look for people sharing a huge amound of files.
of couse this information could be incorrect..

actually, I have an easier time connecting to users on kazaa
then on slsk, what with the entire community always fucking
queued. If I can't get something on Kazaa, I get it on slsk,
that's really all it comes down to for me.

is soulseek 'safer' thank kazaa in this respect?
like..... are you less likely to get picked as a soulseek
user cus its a smaller, less popular program?

last i read they're targetting big sharers.... they're not
going to sue you for stealing 50 songs, theyll get you for
giving away 10 000

maybe cus they know people are more interested in getting
music than sharing it

so, a) people are more willing to stop sharing than to stop
d/ling, but b) the less people share, the less there is to
download...

are, I just have no idea.
