Electric guitar, electric bass, violin, didjeridoo, normal guitar, djembe, mouth-harp, cello, piano, synth (Roland XP-30) and just about whatever we find that makes noise.

the mixer has +46v phantom power. don't really understand WHAT that is, but we get sound.. even though we don't actually use the phantom power. don't think that was recommended for mics.

phantom power is +48 volts and it is used for more up market mics which require a power source to operate. they have the best quality, but require the 48 volt supply or else they wont function, unlike cheapy vocal mics, which are passive, i.e. they work on a moving coil, like a speaker. theres loadsa info on the net, just search for phantom power if you are interested.

get some decent outboard units. lexicon multi effects, tc electronic reverb units, focusrite voicemaster pro, some kind of compressor. get a decent compressor outboard, and some decent multifx, and a voice strip/channel if you can afford all three, you will notice a difference, but may need a slightly bigger mixer(?) i think some money will need to be spent though!

i think the first thing to do is to get condenser microphones, even just one, or a pair for stereo recording. it's essential when you want a decent sound recording acoustic instruments & spaces.
