hello folks.....long time no see. I need to find info on the "history" of braindance, idm or whatever you want to call it. Im getting started on an essay of the roots of contemporary electronica for school, and any sources of info would be of great help.
thanx.

i'd also say there isn't a "story" as such - unless youre going to delve right back into the history of all electronic music..
from synths thru to the early house & acid tracks in the late 80s.. how that sub-divided into rave, techno, house - and then further assimilating other influences & spawning jungle, drum+bass & garage..
out of all this huge melting pot a few (mainly non-musical) people have experimented with the boundaries of these musical styles, without the dancefloor in mind - hence the whole "idm" phrase.
if you dont tailor your tunes for djs to mix & people to dance to easily, then youre not restricted in how experimental/avant-garde they can be.
def check out rephlex history. warp too. its more to do with pockets of people, friends or record label-mates.
but because music is so universal, tunes & styles cross the globe in no time at all, everything bleeds into one & people end up splitting hairs about who had what idea first.
youre likely to find many different stories, rather than just one.
just look at how broad the span of musical styles that the term "idm" encompasses. i imagine youll find a lot of grey areas.

guess youve got to pick a corner of the world to focus on for all this.
uk, europe, us.. the history of electronica is going to be slightly different for each place - though there may well be some shared themes/records/labels/people..
that, if anything, might be your story.

Wasn't there a girl doing a similar essay about a year ago? She came here, asked a few questions and said she would post a link to her essay. Did she ever get back to us?
