IDM + House music... possibly actual "dancable" IDM.

This is what I'm going to spin, I have a full set ready to
go and will be recording it live in early February and put
it up for your enjoyment.

Discuss... artists, tracks, general microhouse theory,
haters, lovers, dancing naked, whatever you like

Simon Reynolds has "Macrohouse" as one of his predictions
for the '04 - slightly tougue in cheek...

(macroHouse being house with just all the obvious, cheesey
bits combined...)...

micro-sampling is more about texturizing the sound.
Everything with beats can be produced with click-&-cut
style.

See Funkstorung, crunch, quinoline yellow, autechre, prefuse
for hip-hop. See above for funky, groovy style but they also
do dub/chill-out tracks, see latest devine for his ambient
track.

Macro vision of life is for texans.

Would minimal house from Basic Channel be considered
microhouse ? I love some of the stuff from there....

Yeah Akufen is amazing but listening to a whole album is
like eating a bowl of frosting, too rich for my blood. He
should try doing some more minimal shit to shake it up.

deadbeat and the rip off artist would be 2 others who could
easily match the micro sample styles of akufen. both had
excellent releases on vertical form in 2003. and as far as
akufen, i believe hes reworking some stuff based on the
concept series from richie hawtin circa mid 90's. should be
interesting...

actually. deadbeat released with stephen beaupre on the
onitor label called "its a crackhaus thing" one of the best
releases of that genre, in 2003.
both were just in town with akufen and kooky scientist.

A lot of house elements, solid 4/4 bass drum kicks and
sometimes a heavy bass line

The music emphasizes some of the minute details you hear in
house, hence the glitches and short vocal samples in some of
the more trademark pieces of the genre. Ambient lines, cut
up lines of all kinds, and attention to detail over the
traditional house lines.

genres are bullshit anyways. classifying things as this or
that only add to the ignorance of people and their musical
taste or lack of. someone can say they dont like microhouse
simply because they see it as dance music and only want to
hear shit that sounds like warp and thats fucking retarded.
i hate people with that mentality. anyways. microhouse is
far more complex than your traditional house music. i think
its far more interesting still, and has more than just dance
music appeal.

offline Sanguine from San Francisco (United States) on 2004-02-14 00:53 [#01072585]

Genres just help people understand sort of what kind of
music they're going to listen to... I think it's widely
understood most music doesn't fit snugly into a certain
genre and microhouse is definitly no exception. All genres
have a taste of other genres, just derivitive with some
major parts found in whatever they're trying to emulate.

Microhouse isn't more comlex than house. Now I'm not saying
most house is complex, because quite honestly I find most of
it really boring and repetitive.

I listen to Akufen for too long and I feel the same thing,
it's repetitive and doesn't change a lot.

That's part of house though, people appreciate the groove.
Until you've made house that people dance to consistantly.

Most people don't understand musical genres to the extent
that the music makers and DJs do so of COURSE they're
ignorant about it. They don't care. They want to go to a
club and expect a certain type of music so they don't waste
their time with something that doesn't get them energized.

Just because you're not "ignorant" of the music styles
doesn't put you on a pedestal.

Until you've made music that gets people moving on the dance
floor, don't knock it. It's DIFFICULT to get music that
consistantly works and even harder to start moving towards a
new genre that people don't normally associate with house.
(finished that sentence, sorry)

im not knocking dance music. and im not trying to put
myself on any pedestal. its that very same mentality of
others that i cant stand. im specifically pointing out
elitist attittudes towards what others perceive as dance
music because its not idm, when in essence, alot of the
micro type stuff is a greater sibling to idm than actual
dance music.

offline acidwash from detroit (United States) on 2004-02-14 01:11 [#01072590]

whatever. im a fan of way too much music to defend either.
give me akufen with autechre anyday. its all solid stuff!!!
the point i was making is to look beyond what you already
know. explore new labels. dive into other "genres"!!!

No question other people do that and in a sense (whether you
intended to or not) you were doing the exact same thing.

When you say microhouse is much more complex then
traditional dance music, I just can't agree with that. There
is some dance music regularly played that is really well
done and interesting if you listen to the production and
what's going on. It's complex in a much different way.

In IDM people tend to concentrate more on what's going on
the in the music. In dance it's much more about the groove
and the production values.

So yeah, I totally agree people are elitist especially when
it comes to IDM. Too many people don't like some great dance
artists. Personally I think Basement Jaxx is freaking
phenomenal, Sasha, Propellerheads, Crystal Method (well,
mostly their first album), Juno reactor, Hybrid, and I see
a lot of threads about those sorts of people on here with
some good, some bad responses. Any genre you pay attention
to it happens. I talk to a lot of house heads at clubs who
won't listen to anything else.

I see microhouse as a cross genre bringing in IDM aspects
into traditional house music. I don't think it's evolved
into a great genre yet but if we get a couple really strong
artists moving into it we'll see a LOT of popularity. House
is one of the few genres (along with Hip Hop) that has
withstood a long time and kept coming back really strongly.
It's a perfect area for some glitch to start coming up
really heavily. We see some in Fat Boy Slim, Basement Jaxx
and a lot of other artists just nothing that has been catchy
enough to be a top ten quite yet.

It will happen.

I'm actually working on making microhouse because I see it
being a very popular area and something that needs a big
boost as far as killing the "repetitive" vibe I keep hearing
in House. Either with some creative DJing or better
production with the tracks. I aim to do both, time will tell
if I can pull it off.

everyone please stop whining about people using
classifications to discuss music... everyone knows that
music is not truly reducible to any sort of structuralist
definitions... as sure as absolutely nothing is reducible to
structuralist definitions and language is an arbitrary
structure that informs are capacity to "know" and thus no
communication is really truly valid by validity's own
standards... we suspend disbelief in the name of some futile
form of communication because that seems to be our lot as
humans... if we want to discuss the differences between
microhouse, and click-house, or glitch-techno, we will...
and if it bothers you, well just know that it bothers us
too... we just can't help ourselves
