This CD was cryptically credited as "written by Plus One, produced by Plaid." And while nobody seems to want to admit what exactly this means, the apple certainly hasn't fallen far from the tree. It is clear that this album was made using the same sonic palette as Plaid's other work, although in a much more remedial form. That means the playful bleep and blip sounds are in full effect here, but the normally intricate layers of machine music found on Plaid's albums are stripped down to...well, the Bare Necessities. While other artist's experiments with reduction (Richie Hawtin's Consumed, for example) often result in notable shifts in the finished product, this album still gives the same chiming, melodic effect as previous, more elaborate works. One thing that remains the same is the basic rhythms, which alternate from trotting 16th notes on "Sticker" and "II" to sparse breaks on "Arabesk" and calypso loops on "Metro," all of which are Plaid standards. So the best guest is that Plus One is little more than a Plaid side project, most likely tossed together in a limited time frame, with immediate ideas taking precedent over carefully crafted structure. But that certainly does not decrease the value of these compositions, which play out like personal sketches from the same skilled hands of master artists. (from AMG)
I have this on mp3 but I can't remember ever listening to it... I'll stick it on later.
