i like silent hill the most. mostly because its just that, the catalyst. and i think its crudeness and atmosphere is amazing. definitely not as refined but something about that game still creeps me out everytime i play it. i love the others of course, but the first one i have fond memories of being in complete awe that i was actually playing this game. i couldnt even believe it, that was 5 some years ago. never seen a thing like it in a game at the time.

the first time I played SH2, it was with a friend and we rented it for like 24 hours. we began playing at 1 am and didnt quit until 16 hours later. we just couldn't stop, it was like "ok, just ONE more riddle/boss, just to see what happens next!"
but we finished the game. we were like zombies.

I don't know if I agree... I think it's BETTER, but I like the whole fromage-y atmosphere in the RE games. I don't like the big elaborate action cutscenes, but I love playing RE games in the same way I love watching a B horror movie. Silent Hill is my preferred series though, but it's close.

I downloaded the Silent Hill 4 trailer from IGN.com, and proceeded to piss in my pants.
When the weird thing is dashing towards the screen, grunting booming out of the subwoofer, I yelped.
Can't fucking wait. This is my most wanted game, but it's still far, far away.

I dashed down to the mall this evening to get it, but it wasn't there. It probably WON'T be there until Monday, but I'm going to check tomorrow and Saturday, because I am driven.
I'd prefer the Xbox version, for obvious reasons, but whatever one I find first, I'm grabbing.
I refuse to rent it, that's so early '90s.
EGM gave it straight 7.5s, I believe... which is good, for that publication. But I'm sure you can bump it up to a 9, because they're generally considered inept and biased, AND they took off points for all the wrong reasons. I think they must have played it in an office environment, in the afternoon, with headphones on, while talking on the cellphone.

i'm not good at talking in depth, so i'll just list things. possible spoilers follow:
so far i've played through the first two levels. yes, this game is set up so that each area feels and acts like a level. the first is a subway and the second is a forest. they don't feel like real locations at all, but so far it seems like each area is meant to be a dream.
there isn't a health/item menu. you pick your items in real time, and your health bar appears when you attack/are attacked. attacking works like a golf game when you use a pipe/golf club (so far i have a 6 iron and a 9 iron). you charge your swings for extra damage.
i LOVE the idea of the apartment. you move through it in first person, and can look out your window to the street below, look out the door's spyhole, and look into a girl's room through a hole behind your cabinet. the blue velvet influence is strong with this one. sometimes your phone rings, and you can find somewhat hidden phone numbers to call. sometimes your door buzzer sounds off. overall, sounds play a very large part in this game -- much more than the previous three.
speaking of which, the music is sexcellent. i wish i pre ordered it so i could be listening to the soundtrack right now. nothing beats the unique industrial trip hop this series is infamous for.
back to combat for a bit. this game is hard, even on normal, which is what i'm playing it on. this time monsters are out to kill you rather than just being there to be killed. the first time i fought monsters, my health was in the red zone. once you get the pistol and learn how to run it becomes more forgiving, however.
the story is a complete mystery at this point. i can't predict anything.
i've saved the bad news for last, sorry to say. so far, this game isn't very scary at all. it's atmospheric, yes, but it's severly lacking the constant sense of dread you get from playing the earlier titles. but i hear this aspect really picks up as you go along.

okay, i went in depth.
to finish: with all of the references, this game seems like it's geared completely towards fans. i'm having a lot of fun playing it, though i have to wait until monday to play more, as i'll be excessively busy over the weekend.
it may disappoint at first, but once you adjust to the new gameplay style, you will undoubtedly fall in love.
p.s there's an item box ala resident evil.

I'm salivating.
''i've saved the bad news for last, sorry to say. so far, this

Yeah, I heard about this... and I did hear it does indeed pick up. Scares aren't the thing I'm looking forward to most, though. When I think back to my favorite in the series, Silent Hill 2... the thing that sticks with me more than the fear and the scares is the loneliness and melancholy. The parking lot, empty parks, that long walk to town, the hotel room, Laura at the piano... I dunno, I found that game totally haunting, and not because of the fear. If there were no enemies and no threat of death, I still would have loved every second of it. Even if there were no Doormen at the hotel, that scene would have been permanently burned into my mind. The whole reason for James being there at that hotel, its current state.
But still... it'd be stupid to dismiss that ''feeling of dread'', there was certainly a lot of that to go around, too, and it's awesome... it's very important. But fear can be such a subjective thing, though... I do hope to be scared and spooked right from the start with SH4. Despite the naysayers. And I still hope to find another emotion other than fear that will define the game for me.
''speaking of which, the music is sexcellent. i wish i pre ordered it so i could be listening to the soundtrack right now. nothing beats the unique industrial trip hop this series is infamous for.''
It's amazing. There's no way I could resist downloading it a long time ago. It'll be fun to hear those songs put into a context now, like rediscovering them.
How is the lighting? One criticism is that it's too BRIGHT... does that have anything to do with the less oppressive atmosphere?

actually, on my brother's tv it was too dark, so we had to adjust the in-game brightness settings. but that was probably just his tv.
a friend of mine who is also playing it has said that it's too BRIGHT, like you said. if this ends up being the case for you, then just manhandle those brightness settings. it's what they're there for.

(yes, i was playing it with my brother, so that detracted from the fear. BUT -- and this is all true -- he bought a fog machine just for this game, and we set everything up in his unfinished basement to play, which looks EXACTLY like a silent hill location. it's marvelous to say the least.)
the atmosphere of this game is incredibly dreamlike.

Cool, my mom just brought me Silent Hill 4... but I can't play it until 10, got a game to watch.
And she got me the PS2 version... hmmm... ditzy. I'll probably have to trade this in or something, I NEED the progressive scan.

> me too... : )
Maria was really a "haunting" and charismatic character... and the melody of the music box in the hotel too, the kind that feels like it will stay in your mind forever... and the finale, with the "distorted" hotel...
-
what is progressive scan anyway?
i have it on Tekken 4 (and maybe another game, i don't remember) but i don't know what it is, i never tried it i fear it might damage my TV...

Progressive Scan is basically a different video signal, it gives you a better signal than the standard interlaced format. It paints more lines or resolution per 1/60th of a second (a full picture instead of just half), so you get a smoother, sharper image. It's not a HUGE difference, but if you know what to look for, it's easy to appreciate. Gotta have a pretty nice TV to display it though, a bigscreen HDTV, usually (though you can get cheaper TVs that will display 480p)... Silent Hill 4 would look pretty awesome on the bigscreen even without it, but with both systems, I might as well get the slightly better looking one. Which I did, this morning.
I played it for a few hours today, got fairly far before I had to give up due to emotional over exertion (these are hard games to play), far enough to get a feel for the ''flow'' and progression of the game. I love it, though it can't touch Silent Hill 2. The whole ''Room'' concept is a clever one, but really, it interrupts a lot of the flow for me at times... when you have to go back to the Room in the midst of questing, that's a pain (I had to go back to get that weirdo his chocolate milk). But in between ''worlds'', I love going back there. It's got this weird air of everyday tedium turned COMPLETELY inside out.
They're throwing a few too many enemies at me, man... too many dogs, too many bugs, too many ghosts. They're all hideous and creepy (and I know the scariest is yet to come), but they're too plentiful. And I'm on easy mode! I don't care for challenge at ALL in these games... while it might be true that it adds a bit more tension if the threat of death is there, to me, it doesn't... I'm immortal and I can always restart and replay the area anyway (and it's always much less scary in that case). I'm more about just experiencing the story and environments... I haven't been let down in that regard at all.
The Forest was awesome... weird layout, but moody art direction. Bloody bandages wrapped around the trees? Creepy...

Also, the character models in this game are astounding... this and Silent Hill 3 have the best I've ever seen, they make the guys in Doom and Half Life look like plastic androids. So much grit and detail, so rough around the edges... polygons that look ''lived in'' (I thought Heather was so fuckable). Henry's a bit of a stud.
That kid in the forest looked so real, it was just EERIE... that mind bogglingly detailed cherub-like face, right out of a painting. The characters are works of art by themselves.

ehm.. you also need component cables (r+g+b+ sound l+r) to display progressive scan, and they cost enough to kill you!
