Question for music makers

A hypothetical one that is...

If you had to choose between never being able to hear
another person's music again (you could still go to places
with music, you'd just not hear it) or never make/hear your
own stuff ever again, which would it be?

never hear/make my own stuff ever again.

definitely never make/hear my own stuff again. i don't take
my music seriously at all. i mean, i make it for a laugh,
and if it was all the music i could ever hear again i'd go
mad in a second :P

Oh, shit.

I don't know.

I'll have to think about it, thank you for ruining my
evening.

i'd rather hear others. i've been thinking of this in my
head from time to time. mainly because i've considering
getting a laptop or possibly some new hardware but in the
long run i think it may be a waste. i may be better off just
buying cds with the money because i enjoy listening to music
pretty much all the time.

never listen to others

that way my music would be uninfluenced (well, no more then
what it has been already)

I guess I would quit whistling to listen to autechre, and
bach and mervin floren's 24 polkas greatest hits.

being influenced is a good thing, though.

I don't want to sound bigheaded- and I'm not for a second
saying my music is good... but I'd go for hearing my own
music. Not so much for playing it back, but I really enjoy
making it. It's even better escapism than videogames.

Also, I reckon if you could only hear your own music, you'd
start to make some wicked stuff after a few years out of
neccessity.

Fun Fact: Elvis claims that he intentionally avoided
listening to other people's music so he wouldn't be
influenced by them. (I'm not sure at which stage in his
career this applied)

eh, I was being serious while trying to make a joke, I'd
much rather hear other people's, no one person can think up
all the different types of sound and structure, they'd be
missing out on a lot, it would be like being color blind
only worse

offline qrter from the future, and it works (Netherlands, The) on 2004-01-09 16:54 [#01025754]

hearing other people's stuff and being influenced by it is
just part of the learning process.

most development of own style follows on from emulation.

offline Clic on 2004-01-09 16:56 [#01025757]

It would just be so fucking boring only listening to my
stuff for the rest of my days.

yes, but at a certain point, Id argue youd have enough
influence to find your own voice.

obviously, its not an ideal situation, never hearing other
music again... but these are the choices, and Im just
saying... I rather listen to my own... because 1. a lack of
music would force me to make more diverse music (and in more
quantity), to fufill an appitite of varied music, and 2. I
love making music. This way, I can write music, and listen
to it. Instead of just listening.

I dont know about this, Im too involved with my 1 band, and
even the other one, as well as my own personal tunes to want
to say no to it, but I cant say, I guess in the ultimate end
id have to say that I would want to never hear my own stuff
again, I guess.... ugh

offline qrter from the future, and it works (Netherlands, The) on 2004-01-09 17:00 [#01025768]

but there will hardly ever be any surprise left in
listening, only in the making process.

which, like Clic says, would make listening to music pretty
boring.

I need to hear different perspectives, something outside of
myself, or I'd just kind of grind down.

i'd probably just want to listen to my stuff. I'd really
miss listening to other people's music, but i really enjoy
making music. i like the feeling of creating something i
also really enjoy listening to.

and i like the feeling of accomplishment when i notice my
ability improving or as i develop new methods, learn new
software and learn to play more instruments.

it's also a good outlet for stress. it calms me, i'm
generally happy when i'm composing.

Damn that's a tough one!

I would go for "not hear my own music again"... But I might
go mad cos it's my only creative outlet... Add to that I
work in music anyway and it'd be like cutting off a limb to
lose the ability to hear my own music...

Dammit, I'd have to go with "never hear other peoples' music
again", not cos I want to, but cos I'd go mad otherwise and
would have to find a new career.

It is the best form of escapism too - I'm into videogames
too, but I always end up frustrated and often more stressed
out than when I started... Especially with F-Zero!

i love my own music, but i'm not a proper composer and there
is a far greater variety and volume of music that's made by
other people.

i enjoy listening to the finished music much more than the
process of making music, which is tedious and time
consuming. there are other creative outlets as well.

how could i compare to bach? the master musicians of
jajouka? steve reich? boc?

with where i am atm with my music id say 'not to hear my
music again'
but if this was a year from now id say 'not to listen to
anybody else' because hopefully by then i will have
developed as a arstist/musician/whatever to enjoi it
properly

yeah either way really. hard to say. i love listening to
music not made by me, and i love making stuff.

but i think its safe to say that this situation will never
arise. least i hope not. dont test me!

im just saying, listening to your own music is a different
feeling... because you made it... so you have more of a bond
with it. Its something you can be proud of.

He he, the nearest to a "Christmas argument" we had this
year was when I screamed at F-zero in triumph after finally
beating samurai goroh (about the 100th attempt) it made my
mum jump and we had a slight row over it.

Haha yeah that one took me a while!

I think I'm stuck on the one just after that now where
you're in this impossible race with about 12 other cars and
you've got to come first... Been stuck on it for the last
month!

I swear that game's just too hardcore sometimes.

I like my ideas & creations & soundscapes & "music"...

I am really disappointed in a lot of other peoples work that
if I could never hear it again, I think I would be much
better off.

Making music is something I cherish. Much more than
listening to other peoples form of communication which I can
not understand.
