Depends on what area of psychology you are thinking about looking into, and in any case steer well clear of sociology...man that is some straight up bullshit.

Sociology is based on nothing more than subjective interpretation. There can never be a wrong answer in any situation. That is what many sociologists think is so good about the subject, but to me, no conclusive answers = complete waste of time.

do you mean sociology or social psychology?
the latter can be pretty interesting.
I studied psychology for a year and promptly went mad.
especially organizational psychology is laughable.

this is true for almost all of psychology.
most of it is based on observations.

i dont look at people the same though, anymore.
Do you see them as ants, soulless automatons motivated by hormones and sublimated urges, frightening unpredictable mandroids, or potential sportscasters?

I am not a major fan of behavioural psychology although coupled with biological information and a case history it can be very interesting. I love analysing individuals, and it is funny how you can often reverse engineer someones past simply from the way they act and react when you ask them questions that don't directly relate to them.

Nah, biological psychology is firmly based in science. That is what I have done the most research into. I acgree though that behavioural psychology can be a very subjective area.

actually, I long since came to the conclusion that the idea of linear thinking and so a linear psychology is outdated.
the idea that something happened in fleetmouses youth made him the person he is now (and how disappointing the outcome is, oh dear oh dear oh dear..) is ofcourse, ridiculous. most psychologists will ofcourse agree - this is putting it much too simple. but they will say that a lot of those elements combined can provide some kind of profile. I don't think we can - human minds are too complex, there are too many variables to do something like that.
and maybe there is just chance - look at all the people that just kind of snap. I would be surprised if most of them have a real idea why they snapped.
this all reflects back into my writing (for plays 'n stuff) - I want my characters to be unpredictable. this does not mean they can go completely off the wall, but they can make decisions that seem unlogical or even chaotic to outside persons, to themselves even.
right. done!

my childhood mouth sex -> "i like my bum"
But yeah I agree people are unpredictable in many ways, however absurdism and nihilism is just a cop-out.
The test of a hypothesis is, can it be used to make predictions? Clearly psychology has some practical applications in criminal profiling, marketing etc. though often it is tinged by cultural presuppositions.

I've said nothing concerning either absurdism or nihilism - just that, like in chaos theory, there are too many elements/variables to make real connections.
I'm also not saying psychology has no use or something dumb like that - it can work very well when used on a direct problem that is at hand, for example.

i think genes have alot of control over who a person becomes. i've seen it in my family and i've seen it in my friends. i think environment is left to regulate how much of a bastard someone is going to become if they've been deemed a bastard from it's days in the womb as a parasitic fetus.

One of these days I'm going to write a play, possibly set in the medieval period, based solely on complex devious plots recorded by Franz de Waal as he observed troops of chimpanzees. And I bet no one would guess where the plot came from, as long as I leave out the feces-hurling. Well most of it anyway.

I have an idea which is going to revolutionize playwriting - writing about writers and about the writing proces. I call it metawriting. Of course, someone could trump me by writing about metawriting, but, dude, c'mon.
