Hm, didn't know about her. Subject matter is similar... I prefer Ryden's rendering, though - it's more dreamy-childlike, with a soft glossiness that contrasts well with the madness. |

mmmmm her colors and rendering are very late 80s early-mid 90s, if you've ever seen Communications Arts magazines from that era... it's too stylized and self conscious for my liking, whereas Ryden seems to be tapping into something deeper that makes me shrink into my chair and ponder the human taste of my saliva like a bad acid trip is just beginning. |

look at how much of the art has a scratchy grey/brown look. It's like reacting against the bright primary colours and neon colours of the early to mid 80s. A lot of it looks to me like the insert art on the Pixies' Doolittle album (from the same period). Things stay that way until grunge comes along and garish underground tattoo style art like Coop gets popular. I'm just making this up as I go along! :D |
