There hasn't been a thread dedicated to the piece of electronic sexified Prince indebted funk that is this album.
So now there is one.

I think beck's talent was pretty much entirely derived from escaping to the world of music because his trailor park- minimum wage job lifestyle sucked. Hence mellow gold. But that made him rich and he's sucked ever since because of the ingrediant that made his music good in the first place: his sucky poor life.

Crazy stuff and sex.

All that trailor park nonsense is rubbish.. it's just hype, Becks dad is a string arranger he's done things with Aerosmith and Greenday as well as the arrangements on Sea change..

It's no longer pessimistic and evil ... like "ass kiss payback" etc. The lyrics are always surreal, probably due less to creativity than to the fact that he really sees the world that way...

Well I read they had to make mellow gold with like a 500 dollar budget or something. Even if he wasn't really poor he probably had to work shitty jobs etc which inspired the negative side to his music. All of a sudden his entire life changed when he got rich I imagine.

midnite vultures is beck's only release that disapointed me.
i really thought it sucked. and i tried very hard to like it.
one foot in the grave is my favorite beck release. allthough mellow gold is trully badass.

Mutations is his best, but Midnite Vultures is worth an occasional listen, imo

I still hope he makes more things similar to Sea Change. He could always go on both side, funky albums and sad country soft rock albums

i dig stereopatheticsoulmanure. golden feelings which is available from ss has some torn up hitched and stiched together hits is worth a listen. I don't think beck has 'lost' anything since becoming successful. His work has changed, mellow gold is very special but how could one keep making the same gold?

I really like beck (odelay is my favourite album), but midnite vultures is definitely his worst album. There are some nice songs on it (sex laws), but debra, the last track, is one of the most awful songs i've ever heard.
