The Last Samurai Movie

Caution, the following post contains spoilers!
-----------------------------------------------------------

After like 10 different searches involving "cruise, samurai,
film, movie, last, etc..." I was unable to find a thread on
this movie.. Anyway, I saw it a couple days ago, and thought
it was pretty damn awesome, just because I've always been
fascinated by the way of bushido and also of feudal japan's
customs. Some parts were a little hokey, such as the last
charge where tom cruise is miraculously only shot in the arm
when everyone else is mowed down by the gattling guns, but
overall I really liked this film.. What did you guys think?

I saw it, and really liked it. It made me think how fucked
up our shit is. The samurai new what was up, they
appreciated everything. I'll buy it when it comes out on
dvd.

Something about Tom Cruise playing as a samurai gives me
that "Its a typical hollywood piece of crap" feeling about
it.

But, who knows maybe it is good, I'll wait for the DVD to
come out to see it.

"Tom Cruise playing as a samurai"

yeah, that really pissed me off when i saw the trailer, but
after I saw the movie I really don't think they could have
picked a better person to play the part, he actually kinda
fits in with the long hair and the beard, he's very good in
the movie, and you have to remember, the story is about an
American who goes to Japan so obviously they can't cast a
japanese person to play the part.

handsome character every time.

i saw a thing on the history channel that explained that
this movie actually portrayed the samurai incorrectly.

it said that they were actually the bad guys durring this
time period. all resisting women's rights, and trying to
hold onto the repressive caste system, and whatnot.

but, since ninjas are so hip right now they made them out to
be noble.

course, i haven't seen the film so what do i know?

sounds good, though what I really can't wait to see is the
new Tim Burton film Big Fish and Sofia Copolla's Lost In
Translation. Anyone seen either of those?

I'd like to see it but it's not high on my priroties list.
I've heard mixed reviews. I've heard that it's one of those
movies that is tailored to please the Academy ala Saving
Private Ryan or Forrest Gump. But i do have much interest
in the period depicted in the film so i am planning to see
it.

from the early nineties ('93?) called SURF NINJAS?

I LOVED this movie. I thought it was done in such a manner
that there was no dumb love story and Tom Cruise was QUITE
tolerable. Makes you really think about the " art of war"
VERY GOOD MOVIE.....

i went to see this last week and it was surprisingly good,
it wasn't at all like a cheesy hollywood movie I expected.
The love scenes were handled really well too.

Big Fish is the next on my 'to see' list

saw it on tuesday, it was not a bad film, i wish it had gone
into more detail about the way of the Samurai, but the
battle scenes were a good trade off. I think the Samurai
could have used better tactics though.

I though for a hollywood filit wasn'tthat bad.
- Crusies character is good - guilt ridden, battle hardened
civil war vet redeems himself by helping what he sees as
folks being repressed by modern forces
- refreshingly lowkey love interest
- reasonable non-gratuitous fight/training scenes

Did you know that the film is set just before the Meiji
Restoration in Japan.Thats when she closed her door for
another 50 years. It was after she sopened them again that
judo, aikido, karate , kendo, etc thrived- modern martial
arts.
i study pre-Meiji arts of kenjutsu, taijustu, kobudo
etc...the kind you see on screen- real battlefield stuff but
we'd use guns too!

so Japan just shut itself off from the world for 50 years
after that?

Jazembo... more or less. Overtly anyway although they still
traded somewhat. they became isolationalist till the
americans arrived in the late 1800's and threathened them
with force.

whats new?

for somebody who seems to attract so much hatred just for
being a prettyboy, cruise actually picks some quite
interesting roles for himself. he doesnt play it as safe as
he quite easily could in his choice of films.

i havent seen "last samurai" yet. can't put my finger on
what put me off it.. but then i felt the same way about
"master&commander" (thought it was going to be excessively
long & lose momentum) but i was actually pleasantly
surprised by it.
i'll probably feel the same way about "samurai"..
but "lost in translation" & "big fish" are higher on my list
of films to see..
