Brief impressions of new albums

...MwmW)m(WmwM... on 2001-12-04 08:15 [#00057966]

these are initial impressions as repeated listens tend to
reshape perception

funckarma "parts"- not as good as I thought it would be. The
purpose here seems to be to try to impress the listener with
the variety of interesting sounds they can create but their
sound manipulation is sub par to the likes of autechre,
funkstorung, crunch, aphex twin. They attempt at humorous
high pitch alvin and chipmunk voices in one song wasn't
humorous.

matmos "a chance to cut is a chance to cure"- An original
fun entertaining release. The sounds are from weird sources
like surgery but the compositions are playful and sometimes
use conventional beats but sometimes plays more with the
sounds. The control over the sound isn't as good as Crunch
or autechre, but the sounds are interesting to begin with
without being modified and tweaked. One song is quite funny
where a woman says a word like "lunchbox" and then they play
a sound of someone opening a lunchbox and eating lunch. They
do it for about 10 words and then repeat the list and make a
beat out of it.

arovane "atol scrap"- I originally really liked it the first
listen, but am much less impressed now. Beats and melodies
are created with a seeming degree of randomness. The songs
build up to interesting structures I guess but are too
homogeneous, if you look at any one part it will be similar
to another part even if slightly different through chance.
The use of reverb is done on I think every melody sound
which is interesting but gets old. It makes good background
music because strangely though complicated you don't really
think about comprehending it too seriously.

otto von schirach (spelling?) "8000 bc"-
This is something few people will like, but it certainly has
my curiosity. It's extremely annoying and forces you to
concentrate to understand just what it is that you are
listening to. It's thesis is constant change I think. It's
like deciphering a language composed with infinite letter
units. There is some symmetry but it lasts just briefly
enough to comprehend it, it's really blipy and glitchy. It's
way more sophisticated than merzbow but almost goes in a
similar direction. It's a thinking album, I don't think I'll
ever get bored of it.
