You dont. But you could record them through cool edit or
such

Get version 2 or above. Seriously.

I used to run a direct to disk recording package (wavelab)
and record to wav as it played... fortunately in 2 and
3(maybe 1.5 as well, but I've not used that) there's a
"render to wav" option.

Highlight the section you want to record as wav then select
'render to disk' then you can pick the quality you want the
rendered version to be.

where is this "render to disk" thing at?

Under \file... I still record direct to disk for when
playing "session" tracks, I just find it easier than
recording the selections/fx changes and then rendering.

In 'File' under 'save as self contained'

Maybe in 3, but in 2 "save as self contained" just saves the
live file with the requesite samples in a folder with the
same name... it doesn't actually make a wav file of the
whole tarck.

Doh! I didn't realise you meant literall "underneath" the
save as self contained option- I thought you meant click on
"save as self contained" and then the option appears :)

Adobe has purchased the rights to cool edit from syntrillium
and released a piece of software called "Audition"

It has most of the benefits of cooledit, plus a
multitracking mixer that enables realtime effects with
dry/wet envelopes, and you can play AVI video files and
render the final mix into that AVI file, amongst many other
neat new features.
