a good friend of mine started his own music mag. issue #2
was published at the start of december.
the focus of the mag is deep house & its roots in soul &
disco - not typical xltronic material, i know.. but as there
are electronica, techno, ambient, drum&bass, hiphop, punk,
funk & jazz fans that frequent these pages - its not
inconceivable that there are those who like to shake their
ass to disco beats, & deep soulful bass..

the mag's getting worldwide distribution as a result of the
team's hard work, so you may well be able to pick it up
regardless of whether youre in the uk, us, canada, japan,
europe.. not sure about oz yet..

if you think it might interest you, check it out. deep house
isn't my first music of choice either. but having been
introduced to it through my friend over the last few years -
i've had some wicked nights out dancing to this kind of
stuff.. found some tunes i really like.. dug out some disco
classics i forgot that i had & enjoyed reading a mag thats
well written & beautifully designed*

* no, im not just saying that cos he's a friend.

seems interesting. that's cool for him that he got that
going. the 'he's 14 and still doing his homework' article
sounded interesting just from the title.

i REALLYT miss record mirror. when they packed up in 1991 i
was gutted. it was the perfect magazine for me - intelligent
with a bias towards dance. reviews with bpms etc, lots of
charts. it never got replaced - now i get music week which
is going downhill fast. i was never a big nme / melody maker
/ sounds fan and smash hits & no. 1 were too pop oriented. i
think there's a definate gap in the market for something
similar to record mirror.

its unbelievable the amount of work that goes into getting
this kind of thing off the ground.
the end result seems worth it. especially as theyre now
getting interest & compliments from djs, promoters,
producers, stores & labels worldwide..

one thing thats struck me every time ive dropped by the
offices to catch up, have a cuppa & listen to some tunes is
how hard theyve had to network to get such extensive
distribution. for those of you not in the UK - the company
whsmith has a monopoly on mag distribution.. not just to
their stores, but to virtually all newsagents. so keepon
have had to approach independant stores themselves & get
copies in there. theyre negociating with record chains in
the uk to get more exposure in highstreet stores.. and as
for all the global shops, theyve done it by finding out from
djs & labels around the world what shops they respect,
writing to them & pitching the idea..

i know so many people who talk about things theyd like to do
(including myself) that i really respect people like the
boys at keepon who act on their ideas & persevere until they
acheive them.

i dont remember record mirror.. but i do agree with you that
the market is starved of good music journalism.

nme in particular pisses me off. it has nothing to do with
me agreeing or disagreeing with their opinions. its because
they build up artists who aren't terribly well known.
announcing that they are "the future of music" - and then as
soon as (partly because of their exposure in nme) the
band/musician/singer actually gets some universal attention
& praise, nme turns on them & slates them.. just for gaining
popularity.. popularity which is partly due to their
magazine?! i just dont get it.

I love The Wire.

I think that if you're a music making person the sign of a
good music magazine is if it inspires you to make some noise
and The Wire does that for me. I like reading about all the
wierd and wonderfully obscure acts that are out there.
