so, under what circumstanced did you first hear idm? ive
gotta say mine was pretty cool. me and two friends were
going on a burn ride at school and one kid brought along his
copy of drukqs. needless to say, it was pretty fuckin crazy,
hearing idm for the first time while reeeeeallllyyyyy high,
considering the only thing close to it that id hear before
was kid a, and well, that didnt brace me at all for that
experience. so whats all a yalls dealios?

in 94, at my old house, my flatmate dave had saw85-92 on
vinyl. heard nothing like it. but at that time, there was no
such thing as idm or electronica. it was techno then i
think.

"Pi" soundtrack, a few years ago. "Bucephalus Bouncing
Ball" converted me, and I bought the only Aphex Twin cd at a
local record store, which was "ICBYD"

idm as a label is far more recent than the style of music it
describes.

the first electronic stuff i heard and liked included
depeche mode, new order, severed heads, skinny puppy, a-ha
(!), cabaret voltaire, etc. the first depeche mode record i
bought would have been "people are people," in 1984 i think.

thinking about it the first "IDM" i really heard was the orb
and orbital, but they were called 'ambient' and 'techno'
acts back then so are they really IDM?

mine is an "i listened to this..." story, very similar to
everyone elses:

saw windowlicker and come to daddy on muchmusic (canadian
mtv), and wrote down "aphex twin - windowlicker - DOWNLOAD
ON NAPSTER RIGHT NOW" but i didn't feel like getting up
since they were actually playing good music. anyways, lost
the piece of paper, and eventually the name of the song
popped into my head outta nowhere, and i was like "shit what
was that shit?" couldnt evenr emember how it sounded. so i
got it and thought "shit i have to get everyone this guy's
ever done" and now i do. on mp3. and i still buy all the
aphex i see. except smojphace. cuz its ghey. and sucks.

back in 1998
I went to a friends house I played the first track and as I
thought it was shit I gave the cd back to the store

4 years later I bought it again

now I love it

When you have children in the future you'll be asking your
kids to 'put a bit of smojphace on, your mum loves that
stuff.' you kids'll be saying 'Dad, you're sooo cheesy' etc.

style

i've always thought IDM to be a ludicrious term. usually
when i use it, i goes in "parentheses".
