Underworld

The_Funkmaster from Newfoundland, Canada on 2001-12-01 23:19 [#00057409]

I must admit, Pearls Girl is like the best dance song
probably that I've ever heard... it's amazing once you get
into it... I usually diss this album Second Toughest in the
Infants, but I think I'm starting to get into it... it ain't
bad, you just need to be in the right mood I guess...

Aron? from Canada on 2001-12-01 23:24 [#00057411]

i like underworld, but that song isn't really all that good
in my opinion

MF from here to be on 2001-12-01 23:28 [#00057412]

dark and long

diego on 2001-12-01 23:28 [#00057413]

Second Toughest in the Infants is a small masterpiece in my
humble opinion.
It's the album that introduced me into electronical music as
a whole...

Fascinating story, eh ?

Fresch from Trondheim, Norway on 2001-12-01 23:42 [#00057416]

hey, Funkmaster: what do you think of
Dubnobasswithmyheadman?

I bought it just because it got such great reviews, but when
i listened to it I thought it was pure shit.

The only decent song on that album is perhaps Cowgirl. (sold
the fuckin' album for £ 1...that's how shitty it was.)

Quoth from Lincoln on 2001-12-02 00:05 [#00057418]

mmm skyscrapers OR river of bass... my favs from underworld

The_Funkmaster from Newfoundland, Canada on 2001-12-02 01:11 [#00057423]

well I don't have anything else by Underworld... I actually
bought this cause a friend of mine sent me a song, it was
called Pearls Girl, and I really liked it... but then when I
listened to the album version, it was totally different... I
guess it was a remix or something... but I'm starting to
like this album...

The_Funkmaster from Newfoundland, Canada on 2001-12-02 01:12 [#00057424]

track two is amazing as well... and track 4 is as well...
well, I guess track 1 is pretty awesome as well... I don't
really know the names, so I'm going by track numbers...

I find though that listening to this album fairly loud with
headphones on is quite an experience... anyways, I'm
starting to like it, which was my original point... :)

The_Funkmaster from Newfoundland, Canada on 2001-12-02 01:18 [#00057426]

actually no, that was Cups or something from Beaucoup Fish
that he sent me... I thought for sure that it was called
Pearl's Girl when I bought this album... ah well, my bad...

Winjer from Cowtown on 2001-12-02 03:11 [#00057450]

Underworld is my favorite electronica act... but second
toughest in the infants is by far my least liked work by
them.... rowla and confusion the waitress are genius, pearls
girl is good, and the rest is pretty average...

I'd reccomend their stuff in this order
1. Beaucoup Fish
2. Dubnobasswithmyheadman
3. Pearls Girl EP
4. Dark & Long EP
5. Born Slippy (original) EP
6. STITI & Lots of other stuff

1010-1111-10 from St.JOnn\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'s Newfoundland, Canada on 2001-12-02 03:30 [#00057453]

Beaucoup Fish = yuck

Born Slippy ep is excellent.

Funk you can find it at music world i think, and its only
around $10, has 50+ min of music (good music too).

Underworld are OK, not great now but not bad either, in my
opinion. Very basic tho when compared to aphex.

The_Funkmaster from Newfoundland, Canada on 2001-12-02 14:04 [#00057520]

well I listened to the whole of Second Toughest last night,
straight through, and I think it's totally amazing... I've
had it for months, but last night was the first time I
actually got really into it...

Murray from England on 2001-12-02 14:52 [#00057522]

Bruce lee (the song) rules, its super funky fresh man

The_Funkmaster from Newfoundland, Canada on 2001-12-02 15:16 [#00057523]

I guess that because the music developes so gradually, it
takes a while to get into it... I mean, the average Aphex
Twin song is like probably 4 or 5 minutes, and there is so
much going on that it never gets boring... but on this album
the average is probably over 10 minutes, and the songs build
really slowly... it's good though, now that I've listened to
it quite a few times...

The_Funkmaster from Newfoundland, Canada on 2001-12-02 15:17 [#00057524]

ok maybe not 10 minutes, but pretty close... whatever 73
divided by 8 is...

Dirtypriest from Denmark on 2001-12-02 15:39 [#00057527]

9,125

diego on 2001-12-02 16:07 [#00057529]

..but has any of you ever seen Underworld live ?
Now THAT's an experience you shouldn't miss out on.

ww_sketcher from Ottawa, Canada on 2001-12-02 16:48 [#00057541]

hearing Born Slippy is a must.

PearlsGirrl from chicago on 2001-12-02 23:16 [#00057603]

ohhhh! underworld was the best live show ive ever been to!!
amazing!!

yeah, and they are a bit more simple and they move alot
slower than aphex and other such stuff, but i think its
really great stuff, hence my user name ;)

Ophecks from Nova Scotia on 2001-12-02 23:26 [#00057604]

Funky, I just downloaded Pearl's Girl, it fucking kicks ass.
What's other good UWorld songs? Tell me, Newf.

Fresch from Trondheim, Norway on 2001-12-02 23:27 [#00057606]

Yeah, Born Slippy is definately worth bying...the Darren
Price remix is amazing.

diego on 2001-12-02 23:47 [#00057608]

you should get it all, I suppose. Don't know any REAL bad UW
tracks, although the ones on Beaucoup Fish are a bit too
minimalistic for my taste. The remixes o the UW singles done
by people OTHER than Underworld are usually crap.

Anyway, to answer your question; get Rez, Dirty Epic,
Cowgirl, Born Slippy (either version is great), Mmm
Skyskraper I love you, any Pearls Girl remix, Rowla, ....

Check the UW discography at www.rtsr.org - lots of audio
samples there too.

The_Funkmaster from Newfoundland, Canada on 2001-12-03 00:07 [#00057609]

Yeah it is great isn't it Ophecks... I've been listening to
it loud with headphones on, and it's mad... I really like
about half way through when the intro line comes in with the
drums, and the vocals... Mmm, that's great...

as for other stuff, well I haven't heard much Underworld
myself, but definately check out the rest of Second Toughest
in the Infants... Rowla is freaking awesome...
Banstyle/Sappys Curry is amazing... probably my favorite
from the album... Jaunita/Kiteless/To Dream of Love is also
amazing... it's all good though...

The_Funkmaster from Newfoundland, Canada on 2001-12-03 02:24 [#00057627]

Track 2 sure does build nice and slowly to such an excellent
climax... amazing stuff!!!

Ophecks from Nova Scotia on 2001-12-03 02:53 [#00057632]

Cool, I'll check them out. Didn't they do something
involving Pink Floyd? Then again, who hasn't?

wayout from a plastic bubble on 2001-12-03 04:57 [#00057645]

check out the tin there version of pearls girl...they sure
do know how to tear shit up!
also check out 'moaner' 'kittens' and 'push upstairs' from
beaucoup fish..hell check out all their songs..
...they also share aphex's tendency to do remixes of their
songs that have nothing to do with the original

and stiti is probably one of my favorite albums of all
time...

Tek from UWS on 2001-12-03 11:54 [#00057732]

STITI is by far the best, everything everything was a huge
let down though,. as was beuacoup fish

\/\/ooÆ’erAttack!!! from Milan on 2001-12-04 17:27 [#00058062]

I like Underworld very much, they made a lot of good songs.
CowGirl is awesome!

WooÆ’er

Phatbert from In front of Computer on 2001-12-04 19:25 [#00058119]

Underworld was the first artist whose old stuff I REALLY
wanted to seek out. I've got about 16 of their CDs now.
Now it's Aphex. Need. More. Aphex. I have 16 Afx CDs as
well.
Still, I have more than 20 Manics CDs which has to be topped
by more Aphex.

Anyway, getting back to what this thread is actually about:
Yes, STITI is their best work.
Yes, it is fucking BRILLIANT with headphones,
Yes, Beaucoup Fish isn't all that great
Yes, Everything, Everything was a let down and
NO, Dubnobasswithmyheadman is definitely NOT shit!
I have to admit buying it straight after hearing STITI for
the first time and feeling let down. The thing is, all three
of UW's albums are completely different styles.

Bad UW track: Puppies. Fucking awful!
Fave UW remix: Deep Pan

Album No. 4 is supposed to be out soon (that means in the
next 12 months with UW)

till then...
www.underworldlive.com for live mp3s and stuff. Everything's
only up for a week tho and is supposed to be archived at
www.dirty.org which seems to have halted to a standstill.
Last archived on 25/5/01.
Ok, I'll shuddup.

The_Funkmaster from Newfoundland, Canada on 2001-12-04 19:29 [#00058120]

didn't underworld break up or something?

Phatbert from here on 2001-12-04 20:33 [#00058124]

no, they didn't break up.
Darren Emerson left UW in April 2000 to concentrate on
DJing. The only track they've recorded since his departure
is 8-ball (on The Beach soundtrack). In fact he was still
officially in the band at the time, but didn't contribute to
the track.

Biro The Leggy is a rumoured track title.

spasticmatt from mp3.com/spasticmatt on 2001-12-04 21:10 [#00058132]

dunno why people said the live album sucked...there was so
much fucking energy in it,so what if they left a couple of
tracks out..it was worth it just for the version of
Juanita...

diego on 2001-12-04 21:23 [#00058135]

I liked Everything Everything very much too, dunno what's so
bad about it. Haven't seen the DVD though..

There's also an 'alternative' Everything Everything live
(double-) album by an Underworld internet community, which
you can either trade or download for free (I think). A bunch
of UW fans selected their favourite tracks from a load of
live recordings, mastered them properly, and made a great
album of it.
More info once again at rtsr.org.

PearlsGirrl from chicago on 2001-12-05 16:46 [#00058403]

id have to agree with phatbert on his opinions of albums
etc...
second toughest is one of my fav albums ever- it is simply
beautiful
dubnobass is still cool, but i dont like it as much as 2nd
toughest
beacoup fish, well lets just say i was very dissapointed. it
had some good points, but, cmon, they could do WAY better.
while i dont think everything everything sucked, it was a
let down to me because i have a bunch of their live stuff
and have seen them live, and EVERYthing live that i have of
theirs (even the bootlegs with not that great sound quality)
is WAY better than everything everything.
hmmm i dont feel like describing all their other stuff so
ill stop here. :P

PearlsGirrl from chicago on 2001-12-05 16:48 [#00058405]

oh yeah and everyone go to rtsr.org for more underworld info
cause its a great site and graham, who pretty much made the
site, is one kick ass dude ;0)

morg from Davis, California on 2001-12-05 21:06 [#00058454]

The only Underworld I'm really familiar with is stuff from
dubnobasswithmyheadman, which I was actually very
underwhelmed by. Not sure why...it just didn't seem as
special as the hype (or my friends) made it out to be.

Alex

diego on 2001-12-06 00:10 [#00058468]

of course, Dubnobasswithmyheadman was released in 1993... I
think in that time it must have been at least a bit
revolutionary.

Not that I think dubnobass... sounds dated by now though,
still think it's a great album.
