don't bother replying, maybe someone can resurrect this topic after dude's album comes out, but anyway i look forward to kanye west's album college dropout.. i know, i know, he's not that great of a rapper, but his lyrics have substance and style, and his tracks are almost always on point.. i'm listening to "through the wire" right now, with its sped up chaka khan sample and cute self-financed and self-directed music video that's actually gotten some play. what i probably look forward to hearing most is "never let you down" featuring jay-z and saul williams on a track together.. i never would have imagined that given saul's views on commercialism and blacks degrading themselves through hip-hop lyrics, so i'm intrigued.
another good track he's done lately is one for twista, "slow jams," and then of course there's jay-z's "encore."
i don't know why i'm bothering, it'll just go downhill within a post or two, but i really think kanye's brilliant within his field of hip-hop production.

hehe.. apparently he and jay aren't even that close.. for example, someone on okayplayer pasted something from a (sohh.com?) interview with washed out roc-a-fella rapper memphis bleek where bleek interrupted the interviewer, who mentioned kanye's name, to put him down for not being a "veteran" and for being so hot right now without even an album out.. jay-z replied in the thread "..." (which could be read as, "yep" i suppose) .. i read that kanye doesn't have any "friends" @ roc-a-fella, he just works w/ 'em.. meanwhile he's giving lots of great beats to "underground" (not really, but compared to roc-a-fella, sure) artists like talib kweli, mos def, dead prez, and more mainstream but "respected" artists like scarface

That's the way the Roc goes! They shit on everyone!
Kanye could probably hold an entire album of his own, and Bleek should shut up!
(Nas - Ether: "Put it together, I rock hoes, y'all roc fellas")

hahah i love that line in "ether".. here's all of it
Nah, I'm tryna' kick the shit you need to learn though That ether, that shit that make your soul burn slow Is he Dame Diddy, Dame Daddy or Dame Dummy? Oh, I get it, you Biggie and he's Puffy Rockefeller died of AIDS, that was the end of his chapter And that's the guy y'all chose to name your company after? Put it together, I rock hoes, y'all rock fellas And now y'all try to take my spot, fellas?
"the roc" pushed back kanye's album a few times, it was finished in the summer apparently.. i think he redid it though (so much of it was already on mixtapes as of mid-2002). M.O.P. signed to roc-a-fella and their album still isn't out. same for ODB. but hopefully w/ their budget and production team (kanye, just blaze, and $$$ for other big names) the albums will turn out really well.

They got the money, but not the talent (of course, there are exceptions, but nothing really noticeable, I think.. i'm having trouble remembering who's signed where at present). That's why they use hired help. :P
I think Dame Dash is leaving Roc, by the way.. at least the source's december issue says so.
