i reckon the best albums were doolittle & surfer rosa.. the come on pilgrim ep was great too.. and bossanova had some good tunes on it.. ah hell, they were all great.
though i do think trompe le monde was their weakest one. it did herald the end of the band. and the elements that had begun to creep into some of the tracks on that record were what made frank black's solo career ultimately disappointing.
still.. i guess after being in a band as monumentally exciting as the pixies, the magic had to die.

I agree - the line "jefrey with one f jefrey" sums it up for me - nonetheless there are some very nice songs on there: motorway to roswell, alec eiffel, letter to memphis, and the wonderful title track.

thanks for agreeing with me.
its not a bad album.. but when you compare it to the others, its a shame it was their swansong.
there is something beautiful about some of the tunes on that record. a sort of tiredness and resignation.. like a musical equivalent of autumn (beautiful but the beginning of the end all the same) something theyd not managed to capture that on their earlier lps.. probably because they werent about to split up.
but yes, anyway, its not as consistent as their first 4 records.

i think bossanova is easily their weakest album, its still good but it just its balanced at all. i really hopoe the news or them touring isnt true; i dont think the pixies should return. i also agree, frank black solo is very disappointing. did you hear Cult of Ray? So awful, my god!

'frankblack' was kind of cheesy 'teenager of the year' had its moments, but was just a bit sprawling for a rock record.. not consistent enough.
'cult of ray' had one or two good ideas.. but not enough to make a whole album (let alone a whole song) which came anywhere near the quality of his pixies-era material.
i havent listened to anything hes released since then.
respect to black francis / frank black / charles thompson III for progressing, i just didnt like the direction he went.
i doubt the rumours will come true. if they do, it could be fun to see the old pixies tunes live (so long as they didnt try to tag new material onto it)..
but it seems unlikely. i dont know how amicable their split was.

i love bossanova, straight through, what is with you people ;)
also, from doolittle, tame is one of my favorite songs from them. haven't heard trompe le monde or surfer rosa yet, in fact i just heard these records as a whole for the first time a couple of weeks ago.

Bossanova was my first Pixies album - I love the spaciness of Ana, The Happening, Havalina -
Surfer Rosa is probably their best but it's very different from Bossanova, much rawer and crazier, somehow more charming too... the re-release comes with the songs from the Come On Pilgrim ep as a bonus.

The Happening is Black Francis's best song, lyrically -
[...] I was driving doing nothing on the shores of Great Salt Lake
When they put it on the air i put it in the hammer lane I soon forgot myeslf and i forgot about the brake I forgot all laws and i forgot about the rain They were talking on the 9 and all across the army band Across the road they were turning around and headed south with me
It got so crowded on the road i started driving in the sand My head was feeling scared but my heart was feeling free The desert turned to mud it seems that everybody heard Everybody was remembering to forget they had the chills Then i heard the voices on a broadcast from up on the bird They were getting interviewed by some Good man whose name was Bill
I'm almost there to Vegas where they're puttin' on a show They've come so far i've lived this long at least i must just go and say
Hello

ha. grew up on the pixies too. :)
Bossanova is the weakest. it sounds too clean and breezy, the only one that actually sounds like it has been recorded in the eighties.
the first two (+ come on pilgrim) are the best, I think.
it's not very fair to keep comparing Frank Black's solo work to his Pixies work. to me it's very different and very good.
"Frank Black" isn't cheesy - it has some great songs on it! a nice little collection of weird stuff.
and I hate "the happening" - really dislike that song. :)

re. bossanova - theres some great songs like 'dig for fire' on this lp.
i do agree with you that doolittle surfer rosa & come on pilgrim are the best.
its hard not to look at them in context - its the same guy doing them. i know fb was trying to do different stuff, all im saying is that it doesnt strike a chord with me like the pixies did. i dont think his solo releases are as revolutionary or important for music. SO many rock bands (good ones and shit ones have ripped off the pixies)..
im not deriding the frankblack lp - for me its cheesy oddness is half of its charm.
i feel that 'the happening' like 'all over the world' and 'is she weird' dont fulfill their potential.

I got into Bossanova during a very bleak time in my life full of dead relatives and cruel ex girlfriends and the happening was my favorite track because I wanted to be part of something bigger than myself, like driving to las vegas to see aliens... I'm lucky I discovered Frank Black's lyrics instead of Scientology.

im more familiar with the albums than anything else. the live cd they tagged onto the limited ed version of 'death to the pixies' is quite interesting.

you should get the B-sides compilation at least.
some great songs on there - Manta Ray, Bailey's Walk, Make Believe (in which the drummer waxes lyrically about Debbie Gibson), Santo, Build High - to name a few.
nene - I think only subbacultcha has an extra bridge.. and I think it's good they removed it, disturbed the flow of that song too much. subbacultcha must be one of the c00lest songs evva.

to me the album version's "duhduhduh-duhduh-duhduh" phrasing seemed more simplistic & less groovy than the "duh--duhduh-duhduh" version..
..sorry thats such a terrible way of explaining it. what i mean is, the album versions bassline is more predictable.. doesnt make you want to dance from you hips.

Surfer Rosa is my fave. A handful of truly classic albums, but Frank Black or whoever he wants to call himself, with the Pixies and without, grates on my nerves for some reason.
I'd rather not see them come back actually, don't tarnish any of their sterling rep.
