hidden fortress is what star wars was somewhat based on. magnificent seven was based on seven samurai and fistful of dollars was based on yojimbo.

i remember why i got mixed up now.. hidden fortress was what star was based on (as machineofgod so kindly clarified)
and throne of blood was basically a re-telling of macbeth.. i knew i knew something about both films, i just didnt know what i knew about which (if that makes more sense)

We're studying Japanese Cinema in my Film Studies class and Kurosawa is one of the directors we are consentrating on.
Rashoman and Yojimbo are two excellent films, he truly is an auteur. Mafune (excuse me for spelling his name wrong) is such a great actor, love him to bits.

takahsi shimura is an awesome kurosawa regular as well. up to kagemush (i think), he had a lot of people as regulars but he started using new people after that.

i'd like to dredge up this thread only to say that Star Wars is based on a lot of stuff, particularly but not exclusively Hidden Fortress... and George Lucas wears his influences on his fucking sleeve... rather than subtle dialectical hommage... it's verbatim shot for shot recreations of all the films he saw in film school... thank you...

i don't think anyone said it was based solely on hidden fortress..
no one ever accused lucas of trying to conceal this fact..
oh, and if you are going to opt for verbatim shot for shot recreations of all the films you saw in film school, telling everyone thats what youve done doesn't make it more credible, or creative. theres no room for irony in plagarism - you have to do something personal with it. luckily for lucas, a lot of people believed he had..
