a lot of (especially older) idm to me sounds to me like it's composed of layers with lots of distance/space/breadth between them -- does anyone else experience this? i don't know any music theory so i can only describe it metaphorically. in rock etc. layers bleed into one another much more --
i think this is why so much idm sounds very solitary, and also part of the reason why this genre sees so many collaborative projects (duos, remixes) -- it's very easy to carve out a new space (aural region, whatever -- any relation to tones? maybe?) within a pre-existing track.
thoughts on this?
