blame it on the movies

taken from a news article:

"A social worker who interviewed Malvo in jail several
months after the two men were arrested in connection with
the three-week sniper spree that killed 10 people in the
Washington area, testified Thursday that she was struck by
the young man's interest in the film "The Matrix," in which
the hero shoots his way out of a computer-imposed world of
virtual reality.
Carmeta Albarus said she watched the movie and
saw similarities between Malvo and the character Neo, who
brings about a massive societal change under the tutelage of
a powerful mentor.
"Neo was going to contribute significantly to
change of the system," said Albarus, a defense witness.
Muhammad fits the role of Morpheus, Neo's mentor, she said.

Albarus was not allowed to discuss Malvo's
impressions of the film. However, Malvo himself mentioned
the "The Matrix" in an interrogation interview that was
played for the jury earlier in the trial.
During the interview, FBI agent Brad Garrett
asked Malvo: "Where should I go look, to understand all
this?"
       Malvo answered: "Matrix."
When Garrett asked if he meant the movie, Malvo
said he did and that both he and Muhammad had watched it. "I
watch 'Matrix' if you let me be able to watch it, forever,"
Malvo said. Defense attorneys planned to show a clip of the
film.
Malvo is charged with capital murder in the
slaying of an FBI analyst during the sniper spree. Muhammad
was convicted of capital murder in another of the deadly
attacks; the jury in his case recommended the death
penalty."

point being: someone who is unstable, is bound to snap over
things that strike them as prolific. they might be pure
works of fantasy, or half truths... but to this person, it
is something that justifies their needs.

this is complete crap. if they get away with a "temporarily
insane" verdict and have to go in a psychiatric hspital
instead of jail, then the system will have failed once
more.

you cannot blame films or music for acts that you have
posed. the responsibility cant be transferred to someone
else.

no one's responsible for their own act anymore.

what the fuck do you know abut this guy? the "system" is
there to protect and help not necessarily to punish. the
system only fails if it makes the incorrect choice.

what do i know? that someone who meticulously planned 10
murders the way those guys did are lucid enough to know what
theyre doing.

UNLESS they can prove, with a clinical diagnostic, that they
are:

- schizophrenic
- in a psychotic episode.

please disregard 2 second option as a psychotic episode does
not last that long.

so unless theyre schizophrenic, you cant blame a movie for
their actions.

the 'system' fails a lot. unless youre one of those naive
people that think that the judiciairy system is flawless.
which i assume is not the case, but i might be wrong.

that wasn't dobbin's point.

he was making clear the distinction between thinking of
"the system" defending and helping people, and it punishing
people.

i thought the purpose of this thread was to inform us about
the fact that the snipers' acts were explainable if you take
into consideration that they were influenced by a film.

the point i wanted to make is that the system would fail if,
in court, this element would be seriously be taken into
consideration. UNLESS the defendends were in fact mentally
ill.

kind of like moore's reason to name his film 'bowling for
columbine'. it's equally rationnal to blame the music the
kids were listening to before killing people as it is to
blame bowling, since this was what the kids were doing
before the slaughter.

maybe my point isnt clear though...

so you think someone who killed 10 people knew what they
were doing?

surely if there wasn't anything wrong with this guy he
wouldnt have killed anyone at all

you seem to be pretty sure he was responsible for his
actions. why are you so sure that resonsibility cannot be
transferred to someone or something else?

yes, but you were making general statements about them
getting off lightly if they were found to be mentally ill,
not so much in the light of being influenced by, of all
films, "The Matrix".

"so you think someone who killed 10 people knew what they
were doing? "

by that logic, every murderer shouldnt be held responsible
for their actions then.

likewise, you seem as sure the film is responsible for his
actions.

a person that is proven to have been influenced by a film to
the point of killing another human leads to the conclusion,
imo, that a mental illness is present.

i think some people just dont get how someone can be THAT
wrecked in the head that they honestly believe doing
something like that is right.

i mean, it's not like they're mentally retarded... you can
get them off the hook that way, cuz they know EXACTLY what
they are doing, they just disagree on the morality of it.

but that doesn't diminish guilt, or the fact that they were
congnisent of their crimes. they knew the punishment they
faced, or else they wouldnt have been so ninja about it.
hiding in a trunk? they didnt want to get caught. no
brainer. they KNEW what they were doing.

someone who is TOTALLY gone is not gonna care if they get
caught or die.

i mean, i DO agree that there is something wrong here, or
else they wouldnt have acted out this way... but i dont
think they are unfit to stand trial, as some here seem to be
suggesting.

and whats MY opinion anyway, im no judge or lawyer or jury.

where did i say that? all i was questioning was the general
attitude of the media and yourself that a guy is
automatically guilty because he shot 10 people

perhaps i was playing devils'a advocate to an extent but
even so, if the system is seen as a soft touch if a man gets
"aquitted" over mental health grounds, it is the systems
fault if it is biased towards what is seen as an easy way
out. and lets not forget that if someone is classified as
mentally ill in this case theyre still not going to get
released.

in england, prison is supposed to be (but in the majority of
cases not) about rehabilitation, not just punishment. even
if it doesnt work, at least the right idea is there even if
it isnt implemented properly.

im just saying i think the guy is nuts, true... but not a
vegetable... he knows what he did... he knows the concept of
police coming after him because he knows he did a bad thing.

of course they are guilty of killing, unless the police have
arrested the wrong people.

if someone kills someone else, he is guilty of killing,
automatically (if you disregard accidental killings). but,
in some cases, mentally ill people cant be held responsible
for their own actions, but that is a very low percentage of
the population.

maybe the snipers were in fact mentally ill, but judging b
their actions and the, if unbiased, i doubt theyre mentally
ill to the point of being influenced by the matrix.

it's kind of a silly argument, but the discussion is
interesting.

by a film. maybe just a little fucked is all.

well, actually... i believe there is a difference in killing
and murder.

killing is self-defence, or animals for food, etc...

murder is out of selfishness.

so technically, i might kill a possum by accidentally
running over it if i cant swerve... but its not murder, it
was an accident. i wasnt doing anythign i shouldnt be to
cause it either, so its not even manslaughter (of course,
its a possum).

anyway, this IS an interesting discussion, i agree.
