i think instead of the pay-for-mp3 thing, they should allow
people to make custom compilations, and then send them a cd
with the tracks that they selected.. or something? it'll be
more expensive, but a lot more people (including me) would
use it i think..

I like the idea, but it sounds pretty expensive.

all the music purists i.e. a large percentage of the people
who would use this system probably won't because mp3 isn't
that great quality. i think your idea is much better.

YES !
i used to buy cds at mp3.com, tevosav records, bought all 3
of thier compilation cds, and by the time they got to my
house the cds were like $5.99 and sounded just fine

but you could do that anyway couldnt you?
you'll have the mp3s so you can do what you want with them

i think thats probably why they are doing it also

But the Mix CD's they make would just be burns of mp3s
anyway...

I agree with phiz, I highly look forward to instantly
obtaining any mp3, burning it, or more realistically just
transferring it to the ipod. (who uses CD's anymore
anyways?)

but what if they made the cds from the original recordings,
and not the mp3s? then it would be cd audio quality.. for
people who hate mp3s (not me though, but i'd use this system
because i can download mp3s from soulseek damnit)

totally ... full wav files could be burnt onto the cd as
it's the time not the file size that matters in that respect
... even if the files are small you can still only get 70
mins of audio on there ...

great idea an they could have packaging etc so you still
felt like you were getting something that you couldn't get
for free ...

mp3's are ok at home but to play out i think you need full
wav's ...

if you want full wavs, you gotta get the original.

get yerselves on ebay and shell out the dollars.

or pay £1 to download a 192kps from warp.

take your pick...

..but why should that be like a rule?

I would definately like wavs more than mp3s.

it'll never happen ofcourse - that would demand a pretty
hefty server, I reckon.

the music relying much on the sound, would suffer as
mp3s..it will always be inferior compared to CD audio. and i
wouldnt like to pay for mp3s..ill stick to paying for CDs
and taking mp3s for free

Autechre said in an interview that they hated how their
music sounded when mp3 compressed.

What about SHN files?

autechre's music is known for sounding shit when compressed.

Honestly a good 192 kb mp3 is good enough for most of your
equipment. Not everybody can afford 1000$+ gear (where you
begin to tell the diff. between wav and mp3).

I agree for autechre music being degenerated by
psycho-encoding - well I agree for most of the glitchy
music.

mp3's are only good to test something out b4 purchasing a
full wav in my mind ...

if you put 14 tracks at the same .99 it would still be album
priced anyway ... and it would be easy to dish out the
royalties, full lp/singles could still be produced for the
people who also wanted the music in that format with full
artwork etc ...

i'm sure it'll all happen eventually ... the majors will
sort it out cos they are the ones with the most money to pay
the backhanders probably ...

either way it's gonna help quality control the insane amount
of music being produced now ...

it's not that hard to hear the difference in quality, even
on mediocre equipment.

I shall pay for their MP3s then re-encode them as Ogg.

you mean like like buying in bulk ?

eg: £2 per track or 10 for £15

that would be pretty cool.
