Anyone heard anything by hafler trio? - want to know whether upcoming ae collaboration likely to be any good or a bit too experimental. I've got every release of autechre but still don't really enjoy listening to EP7 cos it just seems a bit too self aware and up its own arse so I'm hoping this latest release won't be of a similar ilk.

i'd be suprised if this sounds anything like ep7, although i'm a little doubtful of how much of an autechre sound it's going to have to it. although i'm ordering it anyway in fear of it being limited and i won't be able to get it later.

hafler trio is weird to me. i kept thinking nurse with wound for some strange reason, even though i really cant make any connections.
hafler trio to me is either really good, or just a bunch of tv/news/radio broadcasts with ambient/noise. which is good if you are in the mood.
all in all, im hoping beat-esque autechre plays more of a roll. but we shall see.

hafler trio actually did an album with nurse with wound in the late 80's, however steven stapleton requested that nww not be mentioned on the release (i guess he didn't care for the outcome; can't say i blame him). like a lot of the 80s experimental stuff it is interesting concepts that are not so interestingly executed. a lot of 80s experimental is just weird sound loops with artsy transitions, and they usually go on for a long time. they aren't generally the most musically accomplished pieces, either. something more recent groups like autechre have done is taken that basic vibe and added some technical skill to it. the collaberation might be good if autechre uses h30s material as sound source and constructs something out of it.
check out christoph heeman. i think his stuff is better for that type of thing, and more accomplished.

Cheers guys- I'm getting a definite vibe that its unlikely to be very accessible/ something you'd want to play again and again, so I might give it a wide berth until someones kind enough to review their copy. By which time it'll have probably sold out and I'll have to pay over the odds on E-bay.

i really enjoy the collaboration, and i've been trying to hear more Hafler stuff... so far i've found Kill the King is probably the most interesting one, but i've only heard a few releases at this point... anyone heard "Bang!" or "Masturbatorium"?

i'm listening to 'Kill The King' right now, and it sounds excellent so far... a bit like walking alone in a weird landscape in the fog and getting lost...

kill the king seems to be a fav of people, not sure why exactly, maybe the most available? there's a middle part that kind of drags on in my opinion but the rest is worthy of the praise. the artwork is great too

no, there's about 5 of those rereleases by Korm Plastics by now, they're all pretty normally available.
it's just a pretty great record, I think. :)

I like "Bang" - An Open Letter the most, I think. The mixture of cut up news reports, field recordings and industrial ambient stuff works really well me thinks.

i've just heard Masturbatorium... it's kind of deceiving.
it's not that it sounds bad, but a great part of it/the "central" part of it (roughly from 7 to 13 minutes - and the piece is 17:35 long) is already featured in Kill The King...
