i argue now for about a month with my friend about the term
idm. i know this has been discussed lots before, but i
really wanna know your opinion KNOW.
here is a link with a short but quite good article
about it. i mean in lots of articles like this i read that
idm at the beginning had something to do with dancefloor
music, raving. but know ? i mean when i know ask someone
about idm artist's he mentions otto von schirach, venetian
snares, autechre. but is this idm ? what does this have to
do with dancing ??

idm means nothing as it covers too many genres

i'm just curious how this all evolved... what people think
as idm now.

i always thought that otto, snares and ae ARE in fact idm.
but know i'm not sure any more

"i always thought that otto, snares and ae ARE in fact idm"

if it isnt idm, does it change anything?
imo it is still great music so who really cares...

pigeonholing music into genres is not an exact science.. and
sometimes it has some nasty side-effects (genre snobbery
being one).
the thing is, music has come so far and so many styles have
melted into one another (especially with electronic music)
its hard to set some things aside from one another.
personally, i dont like the term idm - because it really
doesnt mean much, literally or musically..
i prefer "electronica" - but even that is a massive
umbrella. as is techno, drum&bass, jazz etc etc.
its always been this way.. take "rock" for example. hendrix
falls into that category (and also into blues & r&b) but, so
does status quo.. or robert palmer.. or phil collins..

sigh..

erm, not really. but so many people use the term idm, me
too. but i would want to know what i'm talking about.

if you don't know what you're talking about, i'd definitely
steer clear of using that terminology.

there are no rules, so its going to mean something slightly
(or dramatically) different to different people.

i wouldnt lose sleep over it if i were you.

well then we all seem to agree.. the term is more or less
redundant.

*sigh*

musicpoliticsartracereligionsexualityhistoryliterature etc.

too much to go into here and now. all i meant was that i've
met a lot of people that talk knowledgeably about things
they only relaly have a loose grip on.
thats about it really.

sometimes its tough, though,
when someone asks:
"what kind of music dyou listen to?"
and all i can give is names... cause how in the freak do you
describe autechre to someone...

What DOES "imo" stand for? (No, it is not a typo, I didn't
mean IDM, that's "intelligent dance music," I know that, but
the phrase you seem to use often instead of saying "in other
words.." or something like that, "imo."). What are the
letters for?
