get some old, almost broken down synthesizers, a casio
keyboard, and an electric guitar. then hire a jazz band.

I recommend FL Studio a.k.a Fruity Loops - in all
seriousness, it's a great program that can do a ton of
stuff, plus you can use VST instruments and effects in it.

thebest advice is try everything and use whatyou feel
comfortable with, it is a personal thing, everyone's set up
is generally unique to them, so the best thing you can do is
search through stuff try everything, work hard at it and
you'll get there.

haha, i could, but then i would never get that "oh fuck i'm
gonna shit my pants look" from people at my shows and it so
worth being uncool just for that.

is it that floops isn't the industry standard? is that why
everyone seems to hate it? because it's definitely one of
the simplest, versatile and most efficient programs i've
used. you can do really cool stuff with it, and it's great
for beginners.

know how to use it and I mean use it well

Get something small which you don't know what it is. Run it
through some stomp boxes to get decent sounds out of it.
Then, when you're famous you can go, "It was mad."

Portland:

It's very easy to make gash tracks that sound alike because
they use the (admittedly awful) standard samples that come
with it. A lot of people churn out that sort of stuff and
subsequently people who hear it was made in floops associate
the toy town sound quality with the program rather than the
person who made it.

It looks pretty ugly.

It's cheaper than Reason (despite the fact you can run VSTs
in it!).

Hardly any pro's- with a few notable exceptions (Snares,
Hecate, Hellfish, etc.) - use it.

Paco: Yes, always do incredibly impractical anal stuff to
get samples- it'll make for good stories in interviews when
you famous :D

the only thing i don't like in fruity loops is it's
title......

i try not to use standard samples (if i do so, i usually do
some changes...... i prefer synth plugins)

ha.... I love the way the workmen are all blaming their
tools for the shitness.

I use all the PS and PS2 titles: Music, Music2000, MTV Music
Gen 2 and Music 3000. I enjoy my music. If others do too
then great but I don't mind if they don't like it. Mp3.com
is shutting down tho which pisses me off.

go now while you still have the chance!!!

Check out Cool Edit Pro. Acid PRo 4
Soundforge...... Fruity. and get a basic understanding of
them

Ableton is good.

Start off by grabbing some free .wavs so you can easier
understand the programs. Do simple things first because
there is a lot that you can do with them all.

Then move on to more complicated things like reason.

Having an understanding of such programs makes things easier
down the road.

fruity loops is a good way to get ideas down quickly. i
like it as a starting point for track production. like a
sketch pad to get the basic outline of the track. but i
usually do all my editing in Acid. i find it easier to do
intricate sequencer trickery outside of a step sequencer.

anyway, if you are good, i believe you can make good tracks
with any equipment/software.
