Well, unless this album is a serious grower and I just
don't "get it" yet, "Ty - Upwards" is the first release on
Ninja Tunes (Big Dada, the label this is on is an offshoot-
a bit like Arcola on Warp)that I've heard/got and not been
pleased with...

I tend not to buy releases without at least hearing one
track from them first, but in the past I've been
consistantly happy with ninja tunes records (something I
think Ninja beat warp on...) and this particular release has
had some excellent reviews so I bought it.

Pretty boring, uninnovative and the few tracks with good
music are let down by Ty's rapping, it'd work better as an
instrumental album apart form the track where he talks about
his music making causing problems with his relationships,
which is both funny and accurate.

As this is on Big Dada (not strictly a ninija tunes release)
and a one off disappointment, I'll let this slide, if it
happens again Ninja will of ruined their "flawless" streak
(in my book) and will be just another lable :-/

Really? You think that highly of them. That's something.
I think Amon Tobin and Coldcut are the only artists worth
listening to on that label.

I think they did a poor job in the mid-late nineties of
keeping their sound fresh. They released a bunch of
records, 9lazy9, DJ Food, Herbalizer...to name a few... that
all had that same UK instrumental hip hop thing going on.
It got boring real quick.

Thankfully, Tobin keeps things interesting and, although
it's not on their label, DJ Coldcut's 70 minutes of madness
is the greatest mix ever.

apart from cinematic orchestra, im not a big ninja tune fan
at all.

i think they label has too much of a homogenous (sp?)
sound...

ninja tune has been good... but i'd say that an awful lot of
ninja tuners have been flogging a dead horse for at least a
few years now

ninja tune. i like all of them a lot. what else would i like
along these lines?

i really enjoy Ninjatune, my last buy was the new Fog album,
but i'd say Ninja are very consistent, good variety too.
is Irrisistible Force Nija?

and who can deny the genius of Coldcuts Journey by DJ,
monstrous.

havent been able to keep up to date with recent ninja
releases, so i havent heard much.

Big Dada releases have been good too,
CloudDead was a great find for me through ninja

Jaga Jazzist is a quite cool ninja tune artist...

Jaga Jazzist are a big band arent they? 'bout 8 of them or
something. havent heard anything, but meant to be very good
live

Spoonz: Get xen cuts (3 disc sampler) and decide for
yourself :)

Phiz: Jaga Jazzist are very good and according to Keyfumbler
great live too.
I nearly bought the new fog album today, what's it like?
Irrisistable Force is ninja, I've not heard anything by them
(him?) other than Nepalese Bliss (which I like).

After listening to the first track a couple more times it
has grown on me, but the rest of the album is pretty
lacking.

thirdball: Their releases do tend to have that highly
produced hip hop "Ninja Sound", but it's one I like.

the Fog album being honest isnt as good as the first, that
guy is on the verge of lunacy, his scratching is amazing,
live he is meant to freak alot of people out with his deck
skills, but the album isnt as consistent as the first.

Global Chillage by the Irrisistible Force is a great album,
also his Mixmag mix is a great listen, i think its on cd
with Alex Patterson mix, a great double header.
and the Fishdance Remixes is a beast too. 8 or 9 track remix
thing, great stuff

Ninja Tune are a pretty decent sort of label. Can't say I've
followed them a lot recently but I mean they have a pretty
decent rooster of artists. Certainly don't come close to
Warp or Rephlex but they are a pretty class act.

Ninja Tune is crap. I listened to Coldcut , and , besides
Timber theres nothing interesting in it. Just a bunch of
guys with seriously sharped nerves sitting besides drums -
nothing interesting, just sounds.
shit
shit
shit

and, Ninja Tune and its logo are the worst combinations -
theres nothing similar between ninjas and their shitty
music. Fuckin Photek has more Ninjas in his music than Amon
Tobin.....i really dont understand this logo

It's because of "stealth", in their early days they had a
club night called stealth and that was the name they gave
their music- a bit like rephlex and braindance.

Ninjitsu = stealth based martial art = appropriate for the
label.

Before you get too harsh on them it's worth noting the cross
over of artists between the warp/rephlex/ninja, not to
mention the remixing that goes on between them...

T-power was involved and considering he wrote mutant jazz i
was very, very dissapointed. Go and check it out and you
will see what i mean.
