IDM (variants) becoming mainstream?

I personally completely expect IDM (crappy, popularised
versions, of course, but still conceptually the same genre)
to be quite popular in the next year or two; perhaps in the
same way techno/trance/dance is.

I was fucking amazed yesterday when I found out Amon Tobin
is DJ'ing at a crappy annual rave here in Adelaide; you
know, the kind where people dress up in fuzzy bright
clothing, listen to cheesy repetative techno, and drop
millions of pills. I mean, it's rad, I'm going because Amon
rules, but I just find it really wierd that he's at
something like that.

Not just that either, but I'm starting to hear artists such
as Future Sound Of London, Aphex Twin, even Autechre (!) on
radio stations here.

I mean, it's both a good thing, and a bad thing; I'm all for
everybody actually liking decent music, believe me, but
unfortunately when things get popularised, they also seem to
slowly degrade to simpler forms of the original without half
the meaning of what it once was. We'll probably see
millions of Squarepusher/AFX/u-ziq ripoffs that sound
terrible, but have some cheesy repetative element that
popularises it.

I'm probably ranting, though.

Thoughts?

OH NO WE'RE NOT THE ELITE ANYMORE.

offline xf from Australia on 2003-11-27 21:15 [#00968342]

i couldn't give a fuck about being 'the elite', i just don't
want to see idm going to shit. one thing i love about the
'genre' is that most releases are solid, and complete
quality; immensly enjoyable.

smaller, closely knit 'communities' tend to actually give a
fuck about their work, and quality is the result; it goes
for everything, not just music.

You're absolutely right. And if anyone has heard the new
Outkast album, I wouldn't be surprised. As of now, I
couldn't be happier because that means that more people will
be exposed to this crazy electronic music instead of the
same old boring MTV bullshit. But I may eat my own words
because MTV will probably have thier own boring bullshit
imitating aphex twin. However, we need to look at the
positive aspects (unless you're a pessimist, then you can go
fuck yourself) which consist of the fact that IDM is just a
subcatagory of electronica, which encompasses any kind of
music made with electronic equipment, which means I'm full
of shit and there will probably be tons of bad IDM wannabe's
saturating the market. :P

amon tobin makes jungle. he does not make idm.

behind someone's voice.

The problem I have with IDM getting popular is that in two
years time people will say "Dude, are you still listening to
that Autechre crap? They were dope like two years ago. You
are so fucking out of touch. It's super ultra hard trance
mania that is dope now."

People are such fucking sheep.

amon tobin is excellent live, much better then the music he
releases!!!
ofcourse if he sees all people dressed up funnily it might
make him play different shit, so that wouldnt be to
great...

last night i was at the doormouse gig (+some others) and
there were like 30 people there, so that doesnt make it all
that popular...also i was at this 3 day festival about two
months ago in rome and there weren't that many people there
as well and the line up was fantastic. now, i would love to
see idm getting more popular just so i could see more gigs,
but i dont really think its going to happen any time soon,
not until they srart promoting them selves a whole lot
more...

electronic music shouldnt become pop because the charts have
always had the same shit format

group of pubic boy/girls singing covers or songs written for
then

or the other side a half decent guitar band gone commercial

if been like this for about 45 yrs now i cant see it
changing much

i wouldnt worry too much kids..
the cyclical fads of what's popular at any one time never
has much of an impact - not on the people who really care
about that music & have been with it a long time.

the same thing happened to drum&bass circa 95. everyone said
it was the way forward, ads for diy stores started using d&b
tracks, people said house was dead. people in the d&b scene
panicked because they thought they were going to get
overexposed.
but in one interview shy fx said "this popularity won't
last, because its not radiofriendly music - its club music,
designed for mixing"
sure enough, once the furore surrounding goldie's timeless
lp & reprazent's new forms had died down, fickled music mags
declared "the end of drum&bass".. just like they declared
"the end of jungle" a few years earlier once guncrime gave
the clubs & tunes a bad name.
drum & bass didnt gain much attention again until marky &
the whole brazilian sound came up a couple of years ago - &
suddenly it was cool again. on public transport, most mobile
ringtones were "shake ur body"..
drum&bass had its moment in the sun. so did garage, so did
trance..
but they all fell out of fashion
doesnt mean its all over though - theyre all still going
strong in their own way last i heard.
most electronica just isnt user-friendly enough to become
pop. anyone with an ear for melody couldnt complain about
"alberto balsalm".. but play them "gantz graf" & suddenly it
wont seem so hip anymore.

another thing - a lot of people are up in arms about the
darkness.. being into tongue-in-cheek big-hair rock will be
fun for five minutes, but i dont see it spelling the end of
the reams of hiphop, r&b & pop that fill the charts.. not
for long anyway.

just because theres festivals like atp and sonar doesnt mean
its popular...its just a festival for people who like that
music...just like lollapalooza or ozzfest are for people who
like that sort of music. just because a festival exists
doesnt mean the music is necessarily popular

All I know is that people are pretty prescious about this
music. For me a good track is a good track if I like it I
like it, so a crap IDM track is just that.
