Gear Guilt ?

I don't normally feel guilt... I have excellent self
control so I tend not to do things I regret very often.
However, occassionally I'll do something (almost always
realising first I'll get twinges of guilt about it later).

One particular thing that I feel bad about, yet still
continue to do is to ask stores to demo equipment, knowing
full well that if I like it I'll buy it online where it's
typically about 15% cheaper. On the one hand stores get
given (or at least at a lower price) equipment by the
company precisely for demo purposes- I don't suppose it
matters much to the company where you buy it from.

I just feel bad (particularly at independent music gear
stores) wasting their time when I'll never buy from them.

yes but that's economics for you. for every sale any sort of
store makes, there's at least 10 more they will not make.
that just how things are. I'm pretty sure you're not the
only one to do this.

uum feel the same, i really want to demo a turntable at the
moment from this small independent music shop knowing that i
probably wont buy it from there, i usually try to support
independant retailers especially record labels - shops tho,
spose in smaller companies you get a better service, i dunno

That's the thing, if it were only £10, or perhaps even £20
difference on a bit of kit costing several hundred, I would.
The thing is, when it's more like £50-80 difference it's
out of the question. On the one hand I'd rarely buy
something that expensive without having a go on one first,
so simply buying from online stores is out of the question.

If they sell records as well I invariably buy one or two,
just to sort of pay them for their time/using their stuff.
I'm sure the big online retailers know full well this goes
on and see it as a way of cutting the cost of having to have
demo gear/a shop front to let people play on it.

the companies probably do get the gear for free to use as
demos, and they want you to fiddle around with it, tell your
mates where they can go to give it a tweak, and so the
pyramid begins

as for the independant stores, i wouldnt feel to bad, they
know that people buy on-line, but they also know that good
customer service (i.e. answering your questions and/or
giving you advice) that you will want to return to them for
something that you'll will need, thats usually the better
part of indi stores, is thier honest concern for the
customer, where as larger companies often just want to "move
the merchandise"

I used to go to the local music shop all the time (a few
times a week for months) & sit in the studio, just playing
on the synths for hours at a time, I think I was known as a
regular in the shop. The staff were really cool with me
tho..... which just encouraged me more. Maybe I'll ask about
getting a job there one of these days, that would be
perfect!!

I'd rather pay the extra money to the local shop than deal
with shipping fees, shipping insurance, shippers
drop-kicking my package, waiting waiting waiting, not being
in when it arrives and having to schedule a trip to pick it
up... fuck that shit.

Besides, if you buy it online and it's defective or sucks,
you can't go back and raise a scene on Saturday afternoon
slamming your hand on the counter and complaining loudly
(the handslam works every time, just be careful with glass
countertops, and make sure to say "I FEEL RAPED" loudly and
repeatedly)

I'd feel raped if I payed the £120 more than the online
price that I was quoted at my local store though :P

I like to have the luxury of buying in stores for the
reasons you've mentioned, but I just feel so gutted spending
those sort of sums of money for it...

I can honestly say it's the thing I've felt most guilty
about in ages. Don't get me wrong, I'm not going to lose
sleep over it and I don't really care that much about
it... it's just that guilt is such a rare feeling for me I
suppose it hits me proportiately harder :)
