It's such an odd release. I can't figure out why, but
sometimes when I listen to it, I love it, and sometimes I
hate it. Sometimes I'll just sit through it without it
connecting with me at all...

this ep goes really well with headphones. i was listening to
it last night whilst rollerblading. the lovely sounds even
helped me overcome the pain the my blistering feet were
radiating.

characi is my favourite, although no one else seems to like
it that much.

I didn't like the release at all at first, because was very
inattentive, now I'm relistening to all Ae releases to
which I was inattentive. I'm gonna check Charachi now once
again... 'til I like it:)

Hehe, that's really the way all of their stuff works.
characi is in a weird time signature (13/8 or something
similar) so it sounded a bit messy to me for a while, but
it's actually amazing.

It's good..

What is the time signature of Fold4, Wrap5???

offline mappatazee from ¨y¨z¨| (Burkina Faso) on 2004-06-02 03:18 [#01218886]
Points: 14294 Status: Lurker

Fold4,Wrap5-- Someone said it's a simple time signiture, but
syncopated or something. I still can't hear it, it sounds
more like it changes half-way through the measure or
something.

offline horsefactory from 💠 (United Kingdom) on 2004-06-02 03:21 [#01218893]
Points: 14867 Status: Regular

Yeah, simple time sig, but the tempo gradually slows down
and then suddenly jumps back to the original, like a
sawtooth wave.

offline Matvey from Kiev (Ukraine) on 2004-06-02 03:22 [#01218898]
Points: 6851 Status: Regular | Followup to mappatazee: #01218886

they just slow down every two or one measure..

offline VLetr from London (United Kingdom) on 2004-06-02 07:29 [#01219255]
Points: 793 Status: Regular | Followup to Matvey: #01218898

Fold4,wrap5: yeah it's just a gradual slow down, then cut
back every 3 bars or so... but the way the tempo jump is
obscured by the glitchy beat is incredible. you can listen,
and listen, and listen again, but you'll never quite
identify a precise moment where the tempo changes.

the precise moment of when the tempo changes is
identifiable. you can hear it in the faint hi hats that are
being played through the song. i didnt find it that hard.

the song is akin to having something at a tempo of 120,
slowing down at a constant rate, until it reaches 60. at the
very moment, another sequence folds (or wraps) over at 120.
the sequence at 60 is also still constant, so it syncs up
with the 120 decay.

theres not a single song in the world that does this, or
does it this well.

Now I have this amazing image of someone rollerblading
around New York listening to Autechre.

Tilapia sounds incredible in the winter I think. When I'm at
home I live in the countryside so winter has a very starch
eerie quality to it. I can't explain it really. Tilapia has
a lot of disintegrating stalactites and refracted light in
frosty glass that emerges halfway through the tune and
builds up and up towards the end.

Ages ago I downloaded the 'Aphex Twin and Autechre Live in
Vancouver' file off the internet. It is obviously only
Autechre. They do this nice progression from Tilapia to a
tune from Peel Sessions II (can't remember which) and a
Draun Quarter from Envane. That was the first time I heard
those tunes. Fucking excellent.

I fucking love Autechre.

I fucking love your bingo wings.

I think Envane is best ep though simply because it has
Laughing Quarter on it. That tune is too good for words. If
you haven't already heard it, please do.

track, from John Peel's Meltdown (allegedly) that is in fact
a reworking of Tilapia. it's awesome.

Characi is tricky. The begining is fractured, the elements
of the track are all over the place and as it progresses
they all start to become focussed. There's a kind of
refinement process until the very last minute when there's
this unfinished slow melody drawn out.
