What is this band/group like? I think I recall hearing that
they are kind of early electronica? What is their sound
similar to? What are some of their more accessible (to a
wider range of tastes) tracks? Thanks.

i really like tortoise.

they aren't electronica at all. more post rock.

they are fantastic, especially if you like xylophones.

my favourite tortoise album is tnt.

They usually are labelled Post Rock group. You should listen
to TNT, wich is their best work IMO. Their last album on
Warp wasn't bad either. Most of their music is quite
accessible.

Several times when I've heard Tortoise on the radio or as a
tv soundtrack I've believed that I was listening to
something by Steve Reich....

"TNT" and "Standards" are both great albums!

yeah tortoise is awesome. TNT was probably their best (it's
also a very make-outable record)... standards was awesome
too. diehard tortoise fans will disagree and say "millions
now living" is their best. whatever the hell post rock is,
yeah that's them sure. but they're kinda like
jazz/electronic.... but i suppose too premeditated to be
jazz and too many members in the band to be electronic.
luke vibert did a (some) remix(es) of them on their remix
album that is (are) worth checking out. isotope 217 is
also worth checking out if you really want to try some more
free-jazz mindfuck less "post rock" type of shiz. it's like
most of the members of tortoise. check em out... they're
top five in my book.

oh yeah when i first heard them i didnt care too much but
they really grew on me. they're not much to get excited
about on the first listen...

Am I the only one that likes Standards the most? Seneca's
probably my fave Tortoise track. They're all great though.

They're post rock, but you can hear little touches of
electronica here and there though.

why does everyone like tnt best? i think its their worst
album...too much cheese(theres classic tortoise moments but
way too inconsistent and thrown together). i like millions
now living will never die way more than any of their other
albums. when standards came out i thought it was the best
but its just pretty good now, djed is their best work and
thats it. i doubt they'll top it. they NEED to try more
stuff like that.

standards is the best, by far.

i feel tnt had really terrible production, even though the
material was good.

everythign before is kinda dry, if you ask me... with the
exception of "glass museum" on "million now living..."
