I've decided to go with Cubase SL, which is the lighter
version of SX. Does anyone else on the board use Cubase
(VST, SX etc)?

What kind of computer do you have and how many audio tracks
can you play back at once? Memory and HD rpm is what I need
to know.

There's a nice package deal called BPM Force (slightly less
than 3000 Swedish krona). It includes some waldorf plug-ins,
Attack, D-Pole and something else.

Maybe I'll just get SL alone, I mean the plug-ins are
available as "extended demos" anyway.

you can do at least 16 Midi tracks.. I'm sure you can do
more tho.. adobe audition has a 128-track setup though

I use cubase vst 5.1 , got a cracked version of sx
somewhere,.but it didn't move me enough to delete 5.1.
I'm using a pIII 1000hz 256 internal and it can easily
manage 15 audio tracks (30 monochannels)

i use SL, it fucking rocks. I have had absolutely no
problems with it whatsoever. Nothing but joy joy joy. You
can have infinite audio tracks playing as far as im aware.
Its up to your memory and CPU power more than cubases'
capacity

Theo, I can have as many MIDI tracks as I want. MIDI isn't
the issue here, you can do MIDI sequencing with a C64 if you
want.

lucifer, that makes me feel so happy :) My laptop is a P4M
1.6GHz, 256MB with a 20GB 4200rpm HD.

The guy at the store said it could handle 32 tracks without
problems, but I guess he would say anything to get at my
wallet.

aphextriplet, how many VSTi's can you run at once, while
still getting reasonable polyphony? Also, what's your
computer specs?

thanks all

I use Nuendo, the next step up from SX (supposedly).

although Cubase 2.0 should be out soon.

I have P4, 1,3Ghz, 256 Mb and 20HGb HD. I can run around 20
tracks with not too many heavy plugins running.

most important thing is your soundcard though. mine is crap,
so I can't use too many plugins at the same time.

it depends very much on the VSTi's you want to use - for
example, Waldorf Attack is very CPU heavy....

I used to run Cubase 5.1 VST 32 on an old Athlon 700 with no
problems, and I could have, say, a half dozen smallish
VSTi's running.

As far as VSTi's go, you can always bounce the audio to its
own track, and open another instance of another VSTi's if
you're running low on performance (you can always load it up
again if you want to change it)

I've currently got the same version of Cubase on my new
Athlon XP 2800+ Barton.... and, well, it runs faster, and I
can load more :))

get loads of top quality RAM (Corsair or Crucial) - get a
decent operating system that allows 1G RAM (XP etc not
win98), adn get a big fast HDD (7200rpm at least, preferably
SCSI, Firewire or even Serial ATA)

PS - get a HDD with a large buffer (8Mb was the best last
time I looked)

that is only the opinion of 1 days use

sx and sx2 pretty nice I havnt run into any problems with
any amount of tracks yet on me p4 2.6, 512
unless youre doing multitrack wave recording/playback, your
hard drive RPM speed wont really matter
but if you are youre going to want at least 7200 yea
theres some utiliity that can mix all of the fragments of
the audio files in your project together sequentially so
that theyre available for use at each step, rather than
being separately defragmented
I forget what its called though, might help if you cant get
7200

I use SX 1.05 on a 2.4 gHz, 512 megs ram, mostly use Synth1
which is very light on the CPU, and the builtin sounds in my
Roland RS 5. I haven't tried to really push it with straight
audio tracks.

I like it a lot but it's hell in a bucket to control
software sliders and knobs (like in a VST) from a knob-box
like the Doepfer. Much prefer the arrangement in FL where
you select a control, twiddle the knob and bob's your uncle.

synth1 is the bees knees!
I think ive run up to 12 of them at once without problems

new one.

Yeah, it's my favorite synth. I love the simple design -
it's amazing how many sounds you can get with such simple
routing.

Have you tried that new VitaminD bank of 128 patches? Some
very nice pads, and it's tuned for version 1.06.

I am going to have to get that
I saw your post on KVR about the whole synth2 thing with the
hex editor
pretty sweet! I found that a lot of my old 1.05 patches
didnt sound the same in 1.06

Yeah some guy suggested to try to modify a registry key so
you could use different color schemes in the two versions.
Gonna try that tonight.

Mostly I found those great TechnoEssentials patches didn't
sound the same in 1.06 - all the shrieking warbling majesty
was gone... dammit I wish the programmer would start
charging some money for this thing and do it fulltime.

I'm getting the RAM maxed out to 1GB, but not right away.
I'll have 512+128 at first, then I'll add another 512MB when
I can afford it.

I've got a PC-Card with 2 USB2.0 ports coming next week, so
I'll probably go with an external drive later.

The amount of VSTi's isn't really a critical matter as I've
got a few hardware synths and I'm not about to sell any of
them (horrible thought!).

I borrowed a book on SX today from the library. The
mastering section in the book is pretty nice. It's by Thad
Brown and has the stunning title, 'Cubase SX for Macintosh
and Windows'. Apparently I'll be up and running in no time.

Thanks for all the info.
