"life-force
energy matrix that flows through the soul of the universe"

haha

The thing that differentiates reality from a dream is that
it is consistent. Every time you wake up, it is there, and
it is the same.

you make a good point..
but i wouldn't say EVERY time you wake up, it'd be the
same.. there could be one day were you just didn't wake up,
or as you woke up, an airplane crashes into your appt/house,
or a bunch of thieves sneak in and slash your throat as you
wake up... these much less-likely scenarios seem much more
irrational or dream-like then usual reality..
but i wouldn't say that dreams are as really as real as what
you are doing now, physically hitting keys, etc, but it's
just your minds best attempt at creating a possible
alternate reality for you experience, and most of the time
you won't know the difference while experiencing it..

All right, good point: reality exists without you existing.
It goes on without you.

"don't give me any of that
spiritual shit "oh, atoms are in tune with the life-force
energy matrix that flows through the soul of the
universe"."

despite your amusing characterization of my perspective,
mappatazee, i assert again that matter is itself a
manifestation of consciousness.
most people will agree that consciousness is not easily
defined, given that it represents to our knowledge a very
complex phenomenon.

let's assume first that we mean a state of awareness, a
basic definition. yet our only perceived reference for
understanding the nature of consciousness-our own state of
awareness-is our own conscious physical experience. it is
believed that mind begins and ends with the body because
that is all you see; the body and its sensory apparatus is
the temporal mirror in which you contemplate your self
within apparent physical reality. while you are
experiencing physical reality it requires tremendous
discipline to see beyond this illusory effect. your body
and its sensory experience is only a part of your self,
which is much broader.

to me, consciousness is the fabric into which we are woven
as patterns. it exists independently of physical
manifestations, yet physical manifestations cannot be
separated from it. what you perceive as solid matter
occupying space is actually emptiness, a void, that is given
definition by the focus of mind. consciousness, energy and
matter are all manifestations of the same.

maybe, but that would mean another lifeform would have to
think of them the same way they think of us, and us of
mosquitoes, and so on

your definitive answer is hundreds of years out of date,
promo! i'm not sure that quote captures descartes'
perspective, either.

isn't the information that we receive through our
perceptions filtered and interpreted? is it not variable,
and in many cases, unreliable? though most of the time our
perception allows us to create a reasonable and useful
facsimile of reality (because to operate in this world
requires only a very small vision), saying that reality is
the information that we receive through our senses seems to
be like saying that electromagnetic energy is our capacity
to perceive light.

aren't dreams also information received through
perceptions?

then are dreams reality?

okay, but answer me this:
if there are factual, experiential instances of lucid dream
states of awareness, then you basically have given a
counterexample to your former supposition - specifically,
that you "can't" tell the difference between dream and
reality. once you provide one example that contradicts this
"can't", there's no point in going further to try and
justify it. it just is false. :)

offline jenf from Toronto (Canada) on 2003-11-20 23:07 [#00959335]
Points: 1062 Status: Lurker

actually, that wasn't presented in a form of a question, so
let me rephrase:
if there is a counterexample, how do you go about discussing
the topic further, taking into consideration an exception?

if you can't tell the difference between dreams and reality
- and the brain regions involved are the same - you couldn't
discuss the topic further, cos there would be no reality and
no dream to talk about. sounds like.. wow, easy.

The universe is information and we are stationary in it,
not three-dimensional and not in space or time. The
information fed to us we hypostatize into the phenomenal
world.

we are inside the black iron prison

it's all an illusion, everything.

they say ignorance is bliss, but nearly everybody is
ignorant but very few are living in bliss.

your whole life is as meaningless as that of an ant.
recognise and understand that FACT. the further you pull
away from that the further from reality you become.

there is no god, there is no you, everything you do over and
above the necessities of staying alive are entirely
pointless and meaningless.

the only question is, how do you want to live your illusion
- for an illusion your life is? do you want to make your
life a happy illusion or an unhappy illusion? to do this,
you need to understand what life actually is and strip away
the content of your culture, conditioning and beliefs.
otherwise, not only will you live in illusion, but also the
permanent struggling for answers, equaling frustration and
perpetual unhappiness.
