hey, this is for anyone signed to any type of label.... be it mp3 or CD based... but more for the CD based people
have you been able to keep the rights etc to your releases?
Im just curious... cause I know sometimes you have to give the record company the rights, but I also know that sometimes you dont...
so yeah... anyone here who are on labels have any input?
thanks!

it all really depends on the label. usually it will be stated in the contract. crazyfungus let me keep all rights to whatever music i released through them, so no worries there.

i recommend copyrighting all works through the US Copyright Office before seriously releasing anything.
The only requirements for a work to be copyrighted is it must have been "published"
"published" = made available to the public or exchanged hands as a bonafide gift.
i had "Welcome to Gusland," my first album i published by myself in CDR form, copyrighted through US Copyright Office. It costs 30 bucks and you send them two copies. You don't get the form back for a few months, maybe more, but it's officially copyright the moment it arrives there.

i know for a fact that aphex has his own music publishing thing (chrysalis/richard d james music) so if you want to be safe you'll want to start a publishing "company" under someone like ASCAP or BMG.... though they both suck, i think there's others....

You're talking soo much rubbish! Publishing has nothing to do with the record company that sells you music. Where are you getting your facts from?

you can self copyright by burning a cd then putting it in a package then mailing to yourself. then you never open it and it's got the postage stamp with a date. it's legit in a court of law and everything.

Depends what you've signed... Hopefully they've only got the rights to exploit your recordings mechanically, ie. CD, Vinyl etc. In what way do you want to 'control' the music after it's in the public domain?

look at some WARP CDs : :
they got the (c) and the (p) "Warp Records Limited"
that's the tracks themselves (the actual music) - - (c) ... and the recorded CD/LP material version - - (p)
also, most artists on Warp have their publishing through Warp
(Published by Warp Music)
some peeps have co-publishing, and some have their own publishing (like aphex)
kcinsu, you NEED to buy a music business book and READ it man. seriously if you are going to make your music you career - - ie, a living.
ascap and bmi don't suck. sorry to whoever said that, cause you're wrong. I've made thousands of dollars this year through them. and it's free to sign up.
make sure you get a writers account AND a publishing account.
do your research and you'll see. good luck!

Isn't that what I just said? You're focusing on the few US publishing companies that are pretty shit really. If you want publishing income you need to go with a multinational, not that nonsense.

i think the reason this "poor man's copyright" works is because by mailing yourself your c.d. you prove the date of it's origination. the post office will date the package proving that whatever contained within the package was created by the person before the post date.

Zeus,
I have record out on Merck and we have the rights to our music. Merck produced it for us but we have all rights to it. If you get a record out on an electronic label you will come to understand that you will be working directly with the label owner, they are cool, and they wont fuck you over, this is small music.
i can't speak for warp though, although I know a few of the artsts, they don't talk about the owners.

i own all the rights to my music and my music is lisenced to the label for a specified period of time.
in other words, i own the music, but they get to put it out for X amount of months or years. after that time, i can stick it on another label if i choose.
small electronic labels are cool and generally willing to work with you.

ive had three releases through two different labels (dumphuck, and raw42).
dumphuck let me retain ownership and all rights, where raw42 (who released a trak on a compilation) own the rights to that recording.
this bassically meen, i still have the rights to that song, but not that recording. if i want to re-release that trak, i would have to make a new mix / recording of it.
