agreed, might be good for a year but you may regret it afterwards.

40 gb long or 20 gb long? It's only 100 dollars more between the two right?

Minidisc is the way to go- how much music do you need to walk around with anyway? If you want a portable file server, you can get a 100gig external HD and a minidisc recorder for the $400 youd spend on an Ipod.
as far as file swapping- the labels are the ones that screw the artists- burn it down- swappers are creating the new paradigm that will truly compensate artists

USA - 20Gb iPod = ¤ 342,- Europe - 20Gb iPod = ¤ 450,-
Its the same but we have to pay more for the damn iPod over here.

i'd like an i pod but there are alot of other things i would spend 500 dollars on first.
for now, i have a portable cd player that plays mp3's on cd as well as cd's (of course)
you can get about 125 songs per cd and cd's are like 35cents each right?
the player cost me about 75 bucks at costco. if it ever breaks, i can return it to costco for a full refund. so really i didn't buy it, i'm just borrowing it from costco for a 75 dollar deposit.
mine is the panasonic sl mp353j. a very inexpensive way to go especially if you have a costco store near you.

anyway, the idea is not to carry cds, and easy access to music
and by the way it will be on my xmass list so i am not buying it so i dont care about the money
