get Reason. its expensive , but its best way to start - easy
, friendly constructed , with full of options, i dont
reccomend Fruity Loops at start - it might be annoying , you
can get just wrong idea about software.

version 1.0 is easily available , then you can upgrade it to
2.5 , which is veeery powerfull.nd it is more aesy to get
samples

You're never too old. Get something like acid/ableton live
and some sample cds first if you've never had any
experience... they'll give you an insight into putting stuff
together that sounds good. Once you've done that I'd get
something like floops or reason to progress.

If you're determined not to go the s/w route, you should be
able to pick up a second hand groovebox in a pawnshop. If
you can afford it, the new Korg Electribe (SX) looks mighty
tasty...

If you put it like that I'd say the exact opposite is true.
A beginner shouldn't immediately invest so much money in
something. What if he doesn't like it as much as he thought
he would? He'd have thrown away all that money for Reason.

Fruity Loops is a good way to start indeed. It teaches you a
lot about basic synthesis principles. The interface however,
is perhaps a bit too easy compared to other music software,
like Reason, Cubase, Logc or various trackers. Progressing
to such programs might be a big leap then.

Good luck!

what im trying to say is that fruity has crapped interface -
it can be very annoying in first contact, . maybe youre
right , maybe right thing to do is to read on web about
these programs.

29 is not too late,.. manifestevil (jason) is 28 and he's
going strong,.. I can't see why you cannot do the same thing
:)

Just stick to your fleetwood mac records, grandad. You have
to have one of those new fangled sequencer thingies to do
dance music. Keep playing your mouth organ and leave it to
the young men.

I agree, there are plenty of people who seem really into
making music and either peter out or even formally "retire"
from music making 6 months down the line...

If you're the sort of person who changes their
opinion/interests all the time (there's a little dilettante
in all of us ;) I'd advice against buying stuff... this is
why software is so good. You can pirate some s/w, use it and
if you like it, buy it or go on to buy some hardware.

On the other hand, there's the old argument that the very
act of buying it with hard earned cash, rather than
"stealing" it will make you more determined as you have
already invested a lot in it.

I found making music so frustrating... I had ideas, just
couldn't get them down... I guess that was my lack of
knowledge of the process, and the software... but still, the
frustration just led me to not want to learn the software!

Aren't you glad you didn't buy a £2000 groovebox? ;)

too old?
you are too old when you are dead

i am also planning to make music, i am 20 years old but can
you tell me that i can do it better just because i'm
younger?

i am going to use rebirth for the drums(cause it works very
easy) and probably cooledit to combine the samples.
fruityloops works easy to create some melodies. i am also
planning to use ableton for some creation, don't know what
because i don't know how it works.

if i where you i would download some trial software to check
if you can make what you are planning to make, then buy.

NO !

i mean yes.... yes you can make music. But do not start with
reason. That is rediculous. Fucking A!!!

Grab demos for software try them out.
Edit .wavs and play around and have fun

soundforge 6.0 Cool Edit AcidPro
fruity

that is a good way to start IMO

good idea, virginp.

start making sounds. forget about making "songs" or "tracks"
for now.

just make sounds you like. play around with the stuff.

then gradually start to look into structure.

you mostly see people skipping the sound-creation-step and
using generic sounds in tracks that are basically pop-songs
in structure - which is okay, but pretty boring.

I recommend hardware, software makes me think i'm playing
games not making music, btw you're not to old.

Plus it gives you an idea how those programs work. Once you
get the basic idea you then grab a program you have never
used and experiment. And so on and so forth.

The basic idea being not only sound modification but the
necessary understanding of how said program operates!!

WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

FOR K_MATY ONLY!!!1

you're right, mister.

people want everything as fast as possible, as easy as
possible.

which results in generic crap.

oh and we do not want that. oh NO !
