... AKA, My Bizarrely - Titled Review of Aphex Twin's ICBYD. This is NOT the pinnacle of his effort (I personally don't even think Guided By Voices's Robert Pollard can pull a barrel of flawless tunes out his ass), but for a stack of outtakes from two distinct periods of his career (the tailend of SAW 85 - 92 & pre - SAW II) it surprises both in its aesthetic beauty & aural consistency. Many will argue that the songs are too repetative for their running lengths (which are a bit 'in the tooth', as well), and I would tend to agree with them. But when Alberto Balsalm or Start as you mean... comes on, I lose it and don't give two fucks. 9.3 / 10 |
