Short albums = top banana

Why are most short albums so good? Not saying that anything
+50min is bad, but under that is virtually a guarantee of
quality.

EXAMPLES
- RDJ album
- Neko Case - Furnace Room Lullaby
- Miles Davis - In A Silent Way
- The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds
- Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Fever To Tell
- Chris Clark - Clarence Park
- The Strokes - Is This It?
- PJ Harvey - Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea
- Massive Attack - Blue Lines
- Bjork - Homogenic
- My Bloody Valentine - Loveless

Is it just the contained statement, with no pseudo-epic crap
attached? Do all these bands just have a short attention
span like myself? Discuss.

In the good old days........an album would be 45 minutes max
so the vinyl could reproduce the music really well. It was
also a good excuse to say to the drummer, 'we can't fit your
track on' or the bassists girlfriend etc.

now you can spread your ideas as thin as you want and let
allsorts of crap be on there..

one of my favourtite albums is computer world - kraftwerk,
it's amazing! 26 minutes long

hm.. Strange.. It feels longer than that.

I think it's just coincidence.
I don't think the length of an album has anything to do with
the quality.
(nice coincidence, tho)

it definitely doesnt. thats just a small selection of what
some, not all people, would consider good. i have long
albums on my favorites lists, and they are right up there if
not more likable to me than short ones.

i could see it in some cases. more short and to the point is
good. but not always

A lot of the short albums were originally vinyl only, i
thought that might have something to do with it. I think it
might be quite a good idea for artists to give themselves
some sort of time limit occasionally, makes you think more
about what you're putting on (most hip-hop albums could
benefit from this). Still, SAWII wouldn't exist... long vs
short albums?

well.... saw II is like 150 mins and is a masterpiece

Agreed... trying to fit SAWII into less than 150min would be
a musical massacre. I don't think this is a hard and fast
rule, just a funny coincidence.

It's great but how often do you listen to it in it's
entirety?

like once a week

I only listen to albums all the way through I never do
playlists

I get an album and play it while I draw.... till it ends...
and then another

I need the ambience once a week

I don't think i've ever heard a punk cd longer than 45
minutes... if so, it's not real punk.

What about Wire's second album?

Or is it too much more post - punk?

I think it was around 50 minutes.

listen to Bad Religion or Minor Threat...

Minor Threat's entire discography is less than 50 min... and
Bad Religion has something like 16 albums... none over 50
minutes.

i feel cheated by short albums. today for example i put on
the new strokes album by the time i've made a cup of tea and
sat down the album is virtually over. really does it take 2
years to make 33 mins of music?
