Kenny Larkin's 'Metaphor'

I was worried that I would never get hold of another copy
of the finest Detroit techno album produced to date, that is
Kenny Larkin's 'Metaphor', originally released in 1996 on
the now deleted label R&S. Luckily it has been reissued on a
label named Distance and seems to be now sweat to get hold
of at all.

I lived inside this album for months after it was first
released. It's an amazing piece of work. I remember some of
the first reviews questioning how something beautiful like
'Metaphor' could possibly come out of a city as ugly as
Detroit. Well, It beats me...

Where his Warp album debut - Azimuth - now seems dated,
Metaphor will stand the test of time! ...like any classic
jazz album.. yeah, this album could just as well have been
released on Blue Note, for instance...

Anyone else appreciate this?

What! No one into this album? I can't believe it! Or maybe
I'm just getting old....?

Me, i'm the biggest Detroit fan on the globe! Kenny Larkin
is just one of the many very interesting artists. Check Juan
Atkins, Derrick May, Suburban knight, Anthony Shakir, Eddie
"flashin" Fowlkes, Octave one, Carl Craig, Stacy pullen,
Underground resistance resistance,Robert Hood, old Jeff
Mills works, Drexciya, Aux 88,...........
There are loads of fantastic pieces of vinyl from Detroit.

It's a pity of that there is just a small number of Detroit
lovers on this MB.

Well artemis, I love all those artists, especially Mills and
Craig, but Metaphor stands out as a landmark album of the
genre to me...and yeah, Detroit seems a bit underrated here!

You are in right. I'm so bored of all the
AE-BOC-topics.

how is this compared to say... carl craig's "more songs
about food and revolutionary art?" i say this is top ten lp
on my list of music period! i have a few larkin tracks on
vinyl, i'lll have to check ehh... what about stacy pullen?
he is in town (sf) next weeeek.

I never really liked 'food and revolutionary art' as an
'album', although it undoubtedly contains several
outstanding tracks.

Metaphor on the other hand is an amazingly accomplished and
cosistent album. Where the sound on '...food and
revolutionary art' goes off in all kinds of directions,
'Metaphor' is a clearly cut study of pure and crispy
electronic sound.

Metaphor is Larkin's very own and distinct progression of
the Detroit sound. In my view he elevates it to a point
where future reissues of this album will come with extensive
linear notes...

word, i'll put it at the top of my list. i really
appericiate your thoughtful insight on the matter, as for
the craig album, i feel the same way about it being weak as
a whole, however i think it strenght relies on it being so
diverse, it reallly open my mind to trying some really far
out sounds. also, i think he gets a little more cohesive
with the innerzone orchestras "programmed" release but
still manages to blow my mind with accositic track... i
can't wait to hear the larkin track... thanks..

My pleasure!

Have you heard Craig's 'The sound of music', released under
the alias 69? I think that's my favorite Craig album so far,
even though it's still just a collection of tracks
originally released under different aliases. I've heard that
some people rate this as the 'Sgt. Pepper album of Detroit
techno' :).

Programmed is also great IMO.
