yes, Led Zepplin rules... and about what flea said, it
doesn't matter when you discover and band or group, who
cares? And who cares if it's on an electronic music board...
it's about time we have some talk about rock music from
someone other then Ophecks! :)

It just shows how kick ass Led Zep were, that their music is
still enjoyed today!

Exactly. They're a decent band, but are given WAY too much
credit... for ripping off every artist under the sun. And
Robert Plant is one of the worst frontmen of all time.

John Bonham is legendary though, a lot of the gritty blues
rock on their first couple of albums is balls-to-the-wall
badass.

auguably Metallica is given way too much credit. Led has set
the standards.

Could you please give an example of how they rip off every
artist under the sun? For discussion purposes?

I wrote this on Wordpad, I hope it doesn't look fucked when
I paste it. I wasn't going to risk losing a rant of THIS
size to a browser crash or something! ;-)

Maybe ''ripoff'' is a bit harsh, because they were pretty
diverse stylistically, but they were pioneers of nothing,
yet get tons of praise heaped on them for being innovative.
They did some shady things, artistically.

They lifted a lot of music from old blues artists. Lines,
riffs, lyrics, and never properly credited them. Whole Lotta
Love was stolen from Willie Dixon and they were even sued
for it, and paid him off. How Many More Times lifts lyrics
from a handful of bluesmen, and a riff from a Yardbirds song
that Jimmy didn't write. Black Mountainside is some sort of
old traditional tune. Rock and Roll rips off the beat and
riff from a Little Richard tune. Tons of songs were lifted
from Jimmy's Yardbirds days, and the PRE-Page Yardbirds
days. Keith Relf, Jeff Beck, all these guys wrote a lot of
the melodies and parts that would eventually become Zeppelin
songs, but they got no credit Jeff Beck probably came up
with a lot of the lead licks. Stairway to Heaven's acoustic
intro is completely ripped from some lame Spirit track, and
the chord progression from an obscure band Zep toured with
early on. Bring it on Home is another old blues track that
they recorded. Communication Breakdown is a direct lift of
some Eddie Cochran song. Even Ritchie Valens' label sued
them for copying Boogie with Stu! There's also a ''new''
song on the BBC Sessions that... isn't new at all, if you
catch my drift. And I can't remember if their version of
Robert Johnson's Travelling Riverside Blues is properly
credited, but probably not.

Even the best line in their catalogue is stolen from an old
bluesman... ''Squeeze my lemon till the juice runs down my
leg''. Howlin' Wolf sued them for The Lemon Song, and God
knows how many other Howlin' Wolf songs they ''borrowed''
riffs from, he was their favorite artist... it showed.
Anyway, there's more thi

Anyway, there's more thievery than I can list, I'm
forgetting tons. I know there's a couple of tracks on
Presence that are verrrrry questionable.

Now, it's one thing to cover an artist, or pay tribute to an
influence via a lifted line... heck, early Beatles albums
were 30% covers. But the problem with Zep is, NOBODY ever
got any credit, except for Page/Plant, for these riffs and
lyrics.. and there were far too many lifted lines. For a
band that relied on riffs so much, they lifted too many of
those, too. They got sewed multiple times and settled it out
of court every time to save face.

To their credit, at least they didn't claim When the Levee
Breaks or Babe I'm Gonna Leave You was theirs.

Don't get me wrong, I like Zep, but they were just fuckin'
INFAMOUS for the swiping of intellectual property and don't
belong in the company of The Beatles, Stones and The Who...
or even the Kinks. And they weren't the first metal band,
like a lot of people claim, and they were definitely not the
''fathers of heavy music''. Or electric blues. Hell, even
Vanilla Fudge, Blue Cheer and Iron Butterfly beat them to
the punch!

They were given WAY too much credit.

Lastly, Jimmy Page and that guitar bow gimmick... he was
ripping off Nigel Tufnel, man!

Oh God. ''Sewed''= SUED.

Anyway, after all that, I still think Led Zep 1 is one of
the best hard rock albums ever, even though half the songs
on them were basically uncredited covers. Scorching guitar
tone and mean drums. They jumped the shark later on, but
those first couple of albums are gritty and badass.

No matter what though, Robert Plant was a farce, hanging out
with three fantastic musicians.

i have to agree with Smyrma and Ophecks.

i used to listen to them long ago when i was into old
hard-rock bands... i'd say their style was rather emotional,
which ruined their music. Black Sabbath and Deep Purple were
way more powerful in this respect...

also, Jimmy Page is one of the most overrated guitarists in
the world, imo.

'When the Levee Breaks' is a great song though, one of my
all-time favorites... John Bonham was a really good drummer,
but this is probably due to that delicious drum sound ;)

My dad was in a band in the 60's. Their song reached top
twenty in the Europe. Robert Plant is a big fan of my dads
songs. Apparently Mr. Plant is a big record collector. Hard
to fucking believe. Last month I found out the Beatles did a
cover of my dads b-side track(the one he wrote) on their US
tour during the sixties. Weird. I know. Im not naming them
cause I don't care if you beleive me. Hey, those oldy one
hit wonders had to grow old and have kids, too.

Like california, That's the way, Tangerine. Street corner

Robert isn't screaming, but singing.

happy?

You ever listen to Zepp? All their songs are about hating

where he is sucking down hot dogs like there aint tomorrow,
rolling his eyes and raising his eyebrows as he shoves them
in his mouth...

Led Zep fans are all a bunch of queer bait pussy ass
motherfuckers.

Too bad most of them are Viet Nam Vets...

I totally disagree with all criticisms made. Zeppelin made
great rock, blues, folk, ethnic and even reggae music in
there time, as well as fusing funk. They are by far one of
the greatest bands of all time, and deserve the accolades.

THEY ARE NOT OVERRATED!

Tell me if there is any other popular band of modern times
that contained musicians as accomplished and virtuosic at
their instruments as Led Zeppelin.

Jimmy Page = Amazing guitarist

Robert Plant = Great Vocalist

John Paul Jones = Amazing bass player, keyboard player,
whatever he feels like

John Bonham = Best rock drummer ever.

Common element of everyone I ever knew who liked Led
Zeppelin. They were the only one who seemed not to know that
they were a worthless piece of social garbage -
unintelligent, humorless, and with nothing to offer to
anyone or anything.

They thought that their opinions made them important.

I don't really get too much into that kind of music..
Stairway to heaven is great but for the most part that kind
of music just doesnt blow my skirt up. I think the music you
were raised on has a more profound impact on what you
consider great music than most people realize. Take
corticalstim for ex (trust me I'm not pickin on you dude), I
don't care for joplin or black sabbath at all, but then
again I didn't grow up listening to them.
