whos into them?
i think their later period work is EXCELLENT, in terms of song composition AND sound sculpture.
the best drones i ever heard in my life are on "soundtracks for the blind".
and gira's writing is excellent!
his book of short stories "the consumer" is an amazing, shocking read.

i just think they're brilliant!
they definitely dont get the props they deserve.
from uplifting, to spiritual, to metaphysical, to depressing, to morbid, to innocent, to abbrassive and furious... they have done it ALL.

their sound was an OBVIOUS influence on sonic youth (see "celebrity lifestyle"), and the new york rock scene in general, michael gira being the biggest and certainly most controversial voice from NYC since lou reed.

the swans were ok (nothing amazing IMO) but you're on the wrong message board, try some indie rock forum.. people here don't have a clue or just don't want to talk about some old shit they don't listen to anymore

indie rock board? thats not even the right crowd. its more in place here than on indie rock.
honestly, i see no connection musically between swans and sonic youth even though they had a slight connection in SY's early years. swans are more similar to neubauten, throbbing gristle, nurse with wound etc (in some ways) than they are to the ny scene like sy, branca, chatham, dna and all that stuff.

yea you're right, people should be more receptive to the swans here but i think since they really weren't amazing like sonic youth or the pixies most people here don't know them. speaking of sonic (who came out before the swans btw tibbar), i was listening to confusion is sex last night and it struck me how influenced they were by joy division.. the basslines, the martin hannett style production, some of the singing, definitely the energy of some of the earlier punkish JD

i'm with you, tibbar. the swans are one of my favorite bands. my favorite album is the great annihilator, hands down. that's a perfect album. filth is my favorite early-swans record. have you heard gira's "drainland"? that's a complete masterpiece.

one time a swan and a wasp were both after my jam sandwich, so i opened it and the wasp landed on it. then i closed the sandwich around the wasp, and fed it to the swan.

I saw them live once..but I was so drunk that I don't remember anything. People tell me it was loud... I do remember the support act, though, coz' that was Pan Sonic - or Panasonic as they used to be called and they were fucking brilliant!

Swans have very few similarities to Sonic Youth. There are a couple of tracks towards the end of the Swans on Soundtracks For The Blind and Swans Are Dead that are highly reminiscent of mid to late 80's Sonic Youth, from a guitar sound point of view, but that really where the similarities end.
I saw Gira perform a solo acoustic show a couple of weeks ago. He played New Mind as the final encore! I was in heaven!

i saw them on their last tour, they were so loud, i cried in the car on the way home because i had such a bad headache.
even download didnt hurt my ears as bad as they did.
it was nuts.
they didnt even play any angry of harsh stuff, it was just so fricken thunderous.
they did an AWESOME rendition of "the sound" though, i remember that.

i didnt say that they sounded like sonic youth, i said they were an obvious influence, which they were. my friends uncle is glenn branca, who worked with BOTH bands in the early 80's, and they most definitely were an influence on sonic youth's NOISIER type stuff.

listen to the older stuff like "confusion is sex", then listen to "filth" or "cop" by swans. the similarity in mentality and approach is obvious.
