Why do you have to use vi? Talk about outdated shite...

zaphod: DAMN. GOOD LUCK.

JAroen: Unix is, more or less, a Linux rip. I guess.

no clue. its supposed to "refine our programming" skill. i
guess using an outdated academic shit language does that.

Linux is actually more or less a Unix rip, and vi is just a
shit text editor for Unix using key commands for absolutely
everything...it is OK I suppose, but I can't understand why
universities still insist on their students using it when in
the real world it is extremely unlikely you would ever have
to.

Zaphod I have used it a couple of years ago...are you having
any particular problems with it?

I've used vi for about 10-11 years exclusively.

vim is a better choice for new people and that's what I use
these days.

But there are friendlier choices for text editors on unix.
See if pico or joe is installed on your system.

vi is a POSIX standard - just like Bourne shell.

The reason people still teach and use it is that it will be
standard on any flavor of unix that you encounter.

After you get a handle on these tools you can move to some
of the more modern and friendly ones.

some unix people would chop your hands off for saying vi/vim
is shit. from what ive seen of it i could imagine that its
loads faster to operate+ more effecient+ automatable than
clunky GUI wimpy text editors you get thesedays, providing
youre a skilled up l33t unix hacker type. goes for emacs
too.

a unix computer is a sun workstation
or a big fuck off main frame
or a little pc running FreeBSD
or whatever.

"intelligent" music.

i was a system administrator for Solaris and Linux servers,
so i use vi exclusively for my editor. it's extremely
powerful, though it does take some getting use to. i've
heard emacs is better, especially for programming, but i
never bothered to jump into it. i also used joe for a while,
which was pretty good, but not as powerful.
