Another great purchase! A lot of acid sounds here too, it
seems the cousin of YosepH by Luke Vibert.

Track2 is an incredible powerful track, Freak is another
great track, definitely a good purchase for everybody.

\/\/.

A beautfiul return to form for LFO (after the hit n miss
Advance)...

Frequencies was on of the first "techno" records I bought -
Life changing stuuf as you realise the sheer purity &
simplicity about the while album...

LFO records smell like the future ! (or maybe it's just
nostalga for a future that didn't happen (The brazilans have
word for these sort of concepts. Theres a theory that
Language shapes thought, so doublt odd we don't have word
for his kinda of stuff....)...

I'll see what links I can dig out (to bore you stupid)....

A couple of tracks I don't dig, and everytime I hear that
''computer voice'', I feel annoyed, but generally, I love
this album. Refreshingly straightforward, still sounds hip
though.

By chance, we had Radio 1 in the car the otherday, and they
played ACID TRAX, the original...)...

But even better, I was mouthing along to LFO We are Back and
sure enough that was the very same record he/she mised
in....

yeah....it doesn't overboard with endless timestreaching or
over production...classic sheffield Bass monsters....

(ACID, of whetver you wanna call it, just sound better when
not processed so much....Too much DSP nowdays...)

I lost the CD a day after I got it and i only found it again
today. Brilliant album...it has everything...it is happy,
sad, sleepy, emotional...complete range of feelings
throughout the album. If anything I think it has been
underrated and overlooked by many people because it doesn't
rely on beat fuckery to maintain interest...it relies on the
music instead, which these days people seem unwilling to
listen to.

"blown" is easily one of my favorite songs of the year. this
album is great because even though not every track is a
knockout it has enough musical variety to make it a solid,
perhaps even classic album. when 'spokes' came out i liked
it just a little more than 'sheath' but 'sheath' has had
more staying power and has stronger melodies and more
interesting and varied beats, so it edges out plaid. oh yeah
and this album has so many bangers like "mum-man" and
"freak," sometimes they actually sound better out of the
context of the album though. i think the most cohesive part
of the album is the middle few tracks (minus "freak"), which
is kind of relaxing? i know that's a bit taboo for a
"techno" album but that's how i felt when i listened to it
twice earlier today. it doesn't need to disrupt your senses
like autechre or squarepusher, though some LFO tracks can go
in that direction (which isn't bad at all).

there aren't enough people talking about this album. i get
the feeling this will be one people will "discover" several
months or even years later.

btw *allegedly* there will be at least one other LFO EP
release in the near future. with the long wait between
albums and the fact that not LFO, but mark bell's friend
selected the tracks for this album (for his car, according
to the press sheet), there must be tons of equally good if
not superior material that warp (or another label under a
different moniker like last time?) could put out. fingers
crossed for something similar to but longer than
"millionaire dogs."

offline xceque on 2003-12-17 13:11 [#00995752]

Advance is a great album. I don't get how folks think it's a
bit dodgy. Maybe in the face of Frequencies, but they're two
completely different animals so you can't really compare.
There's some dead good tracks in there. *puts on Them*

offline ecnadniarb on 2003-12-17 13:14 [#00995753]
Points: 24804 Status: Lurker | Show recordbag

After Frequencies Advance was never going to get a good
reception...if it had sounded like Frequencies everyone
would have went "more of the same with no progression"...as
it turned out it was "sounds too different to Frequencies so
therefore can't be as good an album"

think (i havent heard the album version in a real long time
but from what i remember is a bit different)

long time now. Over 2 weeks (which is alot for me as i
usually change CD's daily)

I was down at ye olde CD Esoterik today and they had copies
of Frequencies and Advance. I tried to listen to Advance
(never heard it before) but the clerks were blasting this
sensitive indie studentcore so I couldn't really get a feel
for it... I picked up Frequencies - only $20 Canadian which
is pretty reasonable for a UK import.

Incidentally they had stocked up on another shitload of
Sheath so it must be selling well - lots of stuff at this
shop only gets ordered in onesies and twosies.
