Well, on both occasions you're still lonely, so I guess it's the same feeling. The difference is that if you've lost something great, you feel loneliness AND longing for the 'good days'.
If you hadn't experienced the 'great' thing, you'd just feel, well, lonely. You don't feel so bad because you've always felt that way.
I don't know if I'm making any sense, but that's how I perceive it.
But ultimately I guess this depends on the person. Some people are not that bothered because they have those good memories and recalling them is a positive experience. Some people on the other hand are hurt by them because they want those great moments to happen again and can't deal with the loss...
