Yes, however anytime the subject of evolution versus design
comes up it's best to get the epistomological wrangling out
of the way early because it will come up eventually.

Now then, what evidence do you have to present for design?
And I don't mean attempts to poke holes in evolution -
because disproving evolution would still not prove that the
Christian God designed and created the universe as we know
it, just as proving Bjork doesn't write her own songs
doesn't prove that Christina Aguilera writes them for her.

I think originally I was going to go into a line of argument
where, after establishing that we define truth by collective
experience and that one channel for experience is evidence,
then we can observe various forms of evidence for the claims
of the bible and evidence for ideas that are contrary to
that to determine whether or not one of them qualifies as
truth.

You know at this point it might prove more efficient to give
you a link to some papers on the subject.

'there are things outside of your "self"'

not to grendal.
(...sorry for the incredibly obscure literary allusion but
it makes perfect sense. fleetmouse, stop being a douche)

fair enough. but hasn't this been done time after time? with
neither side swayed in the least? how can we make it
different this time?

we'll cite finches and moths and you'll cite the word of the
one true lord and we'll all go home shaking our heads.

Actually this guy Kent Hovind got in a pretty nasty debate
with the guy from my site Hugh Ross. Alot of christians
really don't like his ideas about day ages and so forth.

That's a lot of material! Could you do me a favor and point
me to an article that presents positive evidence for
creation rather than trying to refute evolution?

Oh! Hahaha, Kent Hovind? That fucking quack. I saw a
picture of the 'college' where he attained his 'degrees', it
was practically a fucking house in the suburbs.

hmm, i find that site a little alarming in its
presentation.

rather than approaching the evidence to see what comes of
it, it presents you with neat pre-argued justifications for
beliefs you hold already. a pretty queasy intellectual
situation.

'my pesky agnostic neighbour keeps poking holes in my
carefully patched-up faith. quick, i needs me some
reasons.org!'

and lonely. then gets his bloody arm torn off by some hero.
who'd be a monster in the middle ages, i ask you?

"If the universe is uncreated, eternally self-existent, or
accidental then it has no purpose and, consequently, we have
no purpose. Determinism rules. Morality and religion are
ultimately irrelevant."

hahaha.

that cheered me up.

you could say the same thing about .."Hey this christian is
making some sense, did that prophecy actually come true?
Why does this book speak so many truths for my life? Better
scurry over to infidels.org."

No that's okay, I asked him to point me to his best positive
evidence for creation, so I assume that's it.

offline boket from Australia on 2003-10-28 20:17 [#00922678]

ooh, it gets better:

'If the universe is created and the creator is impersonal,
then love, compassion, and care are merely illusions. On the
other hand, if the Creator is personal, then these
attributes and others such as beauty, altruism, mercy, and
justice are real and meaningful.'

we need god to justify truth, beauty, mercy and justice now.
superb. god is our only yardstick for morality.

I think there is a wealth of material on there and
fleetmouse wanted to see some specific stuff related to
design, plus I think that site inparticular is somewhat
peerless in relation to the scope of scientific knowledge
and its relevance to the christian faith.

that's the flipside.

but i would have hoped most people have more intellectual
curiosity, and don't mind being challenged by different
points of view. adapt their point of view when they find
flaws in their current system, rather than looking for
specious arguments to 'defend' it from attack.

is there a noeasyanswers.org?

Change one word:

"If God is uncreated, eternally self-existent, or
accidental then it has no purpose and, consequently, we have
no purpose."

Because if the universe requires something external to
shoehorn meaning and relevance into it, then why is God
exempt from that requirement?
