I rarely if ever get my life changed by an album anymore. It
used to happen seemingly every other month, back in the
classic rock phase.

Joy Division must have been a couple of years ago, and The
Soft Boys, that's been almost a year, and those are my most
recent... not cool. There was a period of a week where I got
7 Beatles albums and they all re-arranged the chemical
makeup of my brain one after another. And then The Beach
Boys the next week.

I should add Echo and the Bunnymen- Ocean Rain and The
Kinks- Something Else by the Kinks in there somewhere.

nin - the downward spiral
aphex twin - saw 85 - 92
the orb - adventures beyond the ultraworld
autechre - incunabula
gnr - apetite for destruction
public enemy - fear of a black planet

these albums 'changed my life' cos they opened my mind to
different types of music, even tho they are not nessercarily
the greatest albums of their type

i think albums coincide with phases of my life more than
they change me. of course, i guess every album changes you
in some way or another.

but, the downward spiral certainly made one hell of
an impression. as did mellon collie & the infinite
sadness
.

I should mention the orb as well...

and public enemy, fear of a black planet really opened my
eyes to some stuff I wasn't being taught at school... Dead
Kennedys as well.

I think it would have to be a tie between I.C.B.Y.D. and RDJ
album.. I got both of them at roughly the same time and it
really opened my eyes to what is now my favorite type of
music. I have found lots of incredible electronica and
ambient since then, but they didnt have quite the same
impact on me as those two albums did.

too many to mention, but here's one: neil young's "harvest".
this album really opened my mind up to how good "classic
rock" (still hate that genre name) albums can be. i had
written classic rock off before that basically because i was
bored with the people who listened to classic rock like the
beatles, led zeppelin, stones, dylan, the doors, etc. and
almost nothing else. those people are extremely boring and
some of those artists have a lot of what in my opinion is
boring music in their catalogue (especially led zeppelin,
the stones, dylan). keep in mind this is all stuff i was
thinking BEFORE the 9th grade when i borrowed "harvest" from
someone and it blew me away. so much old rock music is just
very heartfelt, heartfelt like rock has rarely and barely
been ever since. also, the melodies and sounds remain
interesting today, if not "fresh" sounding. from "harvest"
on i gave lots of other '60s and '70s artists a chance and
realized that some of the best records of all time come from
this period that so many of us so-called non-mainstream
music listeners (*cough* idm geeks) ignore for no good
reason.

I am sure that virtually everything i have heard has had
some small effect on my life however insignificant.

For profound effects i choose:
NIN - Broken
Skinny Puppy - Last Rights
::without these two albums, i might not have met my wife. or
ever really been exposed to electronic music.

pj harvey's stories from the city, stories from the sea
really seems to me to be evidence of a woman in rock who
amazingly enough calls all of her own shots and kicks ass
doing so.

makes me wish i hadnt wasted so much time listening to

my earliest musical exposure was probably the nylons...
singing stuff like "Happy Together", which i would lip-synch
to with a wok ladle... other albums that have been
important:
u2's Zooropa... the music video for Lemon caused me to watch
MuchMusic waiting for it to come on, and Zooropa was one of
the first tapes i ever bought... in junior high, my
favourite album in grade 7 was Soundgarden's Down on the
Upside... the album is probably the first place where i came
into contact with grungey melodies (akin to a lot of stuff
that aphex does), and is probably an early example of an
appreciation for beauty out of apparent ugliness... the
first electronic album i bought was Dig You Own Hole by the
Chemical Brothers... other favourites that i clung to for a
long time... Rancid's And Out Come the Wolves... NIN's the
Fragile (completely shook my conception of art)... DJ
Shadow's Endtroducing, and Download's the Eyes of Stanley
Pain (thus starting a lasting fascination with terrifying
music)... and then there was Drukqs, which was my first
serious dip into idm (yes i know, it was not that long
ago...)... but there are hundreds of beautiful brilliant
albums worth mentioning here...
