do you enjoy listening to a new record for the first time?
stupid question maybe, but i've noticed a lot of times that the first impression often wasn't the "good" one (i.e. not the one that will stay one i'm used to the music)... of course it depends on the music, but now more often i feel like listening to a record sounding "new" (not necessarily experimental! i can like some Merzbow or Autechre at first listen, and i had to get used to some much more normal rock music...) for the first time is like just a little "chore" (well, the term is a bit strong!), in order to appreciate it afterwards... of course there is always the pleasure of being surprised and venturing into unknown new musical lands, but it's quite rare for me to feel this as a pleasure for the first time...
do you feel the same?

I hate listening to stuff for the first time, because the first listen I spend hunting out expectations rather than just listening. The second listen is getting over the fact that my expectations weren't matched, then the third listen is when I begin to really appreciate an album for what it is or isn't.

i feel almost the same about it.
i usually find it hard to enjoy something when listening to it for the first time, unless it's something easy and accessible... but i've noticed that if i enjoy something at once, chances are i will be bored of it soon.
most of all i love that feeling of discovery while listening to the album for the second or third time, when i already know what it's like but i have to discover it little by little.... and there has to be something intriguing there to keep me in suspense...

i agree. so much of the "pop-style idm" (whatever that means?) like "come to daddy" or "do you know squarepusher" i love at first, but then they get boring really fast, while i've never gotten bored of saw II, or anything by autechre.

first listens suck
imo (good) music gets better after a couple of listens...
like when i heared incunabula for the first time, or geogaddi, i found those records to be really weak... those are among my fave ever records now tho

depends on the moosic. I know some albums which I thought were "nah" in the begining, but then has turned out to be really good, or even great.
One example is the "Royal Astronomy"-album which I didn't like much at first listen...
I do live it though, when you hear a track for the first time and for some reason just LOVE it... :)
It happeneds now and then.

theres a difference of what you mean by the first time i listen to an album. when i buy a cd, i normally buy it cuz i know some track i like is on it, thus i tend to listen to that track first. so when i finally get the chance to sit down and just listen to it, i already recognize some of the tracks, but when you do realize the flow of a good album for the first time, it really is great moment

i'm often, verry often, not into an album on the firrst listen. and when i do love it rright away it's because it's 'too' catchy and i soon go off it, orr get borred of it, even if it is good.

I really can't say. There are albums I love on first listen, and albums I hate on first listen. Some of them grow on me, some of them grow off me, some of them stay the same... there's no real pattern. Some albums I'll not like for a year or two, then really come to love...

I can't always tell what I well really like on a first listen... I usually don't really enjoy the best tracks till quite a while after listening to them. My favourite track, Melissa Juice by BoC spent a time as "nice background music" for me, only after about ten listens did I really come to love the track.

Nope. I always get confused and disoriented, wondering which tracks will stand the test of time, which are growers, etc. I only REALLY like songs when I get into them and get to know them. Sometimes I can't make it through whole songs, I need to skip around and test the waters. Not a smooth experience for me.

I'm exactly the same...stuff which hits me as good to begin with gets old really quick...a lot of Luke Viberts stuff is like that for me. Good for a quick fix but gets boring quickly.

it really depends on the music you're listening to.
i think i agree with handoverthecart - that instantly accessible songs get old quickly, while less accessible stuff stays fresher for longer.
