When I went to the Netherlands back in the summer, I was
quite shocked to learn that quite a lot of shops don't open
on a Sunday.....whats that all about??!?! Not that it was
a problem then, cos we did a lot of sightseeing.....but
really, are we living in the dark ages in some countries??!

do you like the 24/7 economy?

I think it gives the people who work all week the
opportunity to get to the stores.

yup, same here. except for some clothing & furniture stores.
a lot of families and old people like to visit those after
going to church on sunday.

I didn't say that. But for the most here in this country, it
is all about the convenience of being able to get anything
you want, anytime, day or night!

I think Sundays should of been kept "shop free" except for
news agents till noon here as well...

My main problem with shop opening times is the way that most
shops open in office hours... how stupid is that? When I was
working, if I wanted to get to the bank or post office, the
only time I could do it was saturday morning- it seems
ludicrous to me that shops are open during the times when
most people with money are in work. I understnad the
implications of having to pay the staff for antisocial
hours, but really, couldn't stores open at noon (so they'd
be open for lunch hour) and close at 7.00pm so people have a
chance to go after work?

church going people were the one that were most against
shops being opened on sundays - they think sunday is a day
to stay with your family not to work...which is funny cos
the people working on sundays didnt mind working, but this
things shouldnt really be decided by referendums, ppl dont
even know what they voted for...

btw, we had all shops opened on sundays before the
referendum

The reason church going people voted against it is that they
feared that if it became the norm they would be
coerced/forced into working on sundays which is against
their religion...

Sadly, it has pretty much happened already. If you work a
shift based job you will at the very least be seen as a
troubl maker if you ask not to work on sundays and at the
worst, lose your job and get a bad reference. Don't get me
wrong, policemen and emergency services should work on
sundays and I have no problem with newsagents opening etc. I
just don't think we should of ever allowed supermarkets,
clothes stores etc. to open on sundays.

The antichrist is laughing his ass off...

(I very rarely go to church BTW)

Sunday shopping hasn't been going for all that many years in
this country. My view is that providin the workers don't
mind working on a Sunday then there is no problem with it.

i bought them today , not in the shop but from a guy who has
loads of IDm but he is leaving country and he's selling all
his cd's . possibly in next week i will buy another cd's
from him - they are cheap according to shops and places
where you can get these cd's as old classics :)

yes, but its a paradox, because at the same time church
going people were the one that were mostly going shoping on
sundays - after visiting the church.

i dont really have on opinion on this...i think if people
would like to work on sundays they can chose so and if
they'd rather stay at home they can chose that...to do this
they could ask each individual whether they would like to
work sundays or not, im pretty sure it was 50/50, so they'd
surely get enough people to work

Newsagents are typically family owned/run and the people
choose to work on sundays- it's different to working in a
branch of virgin megastores or tesco and losing your job
because you will not work on Sundays.

Also, I can see the neccessity of people having to get a few
bits and bobs like milk or bread on a sunday- a newsagent
fulfills these requirements. There's no need for sunday to
of become a proper commercial shopping day.

*munches on fresh baked bread, whilst Ceri has yesterdays
croissants!* :P

More and more people demand it, thats why it has happened.
You mentioned religion and how those people voted against
it......well that just proves a point doesn't it? And also
another topic of conversation, about how religion or perhaps
church going should I say, is dying out......but hey, lets
keep this on topic! :)

Fact: In the UK more people go to church on sunday than to
the football on saturday. I think that shows it's hardly
dying out...

The croissants are actually from friday :P
When I mentioned voting against it I was actually refering
to Slovenia as tolstoyed mentioned them voting against it.
So far as I recall there wasn't a referendum about it in
this country (I'm not certain though, there may have been).

milk.

It's a vegetable which is pretty similair to turnips, but
sweeter tasting. I know a lot of recipies that specify
turnip can be done with swede as an alternative, so maybe it
works the other way and you could use a turnip instead?

(although if you're feeling cannabilistic, I'm sure some
mashed up key_secret would work well ;)
