My architecture professor's last name is composed almost
entirely of consonants ("Brcak"). Doesn't make sense to me
either.

Without vowels, life as we know it would cease to exist.

now, now, xlr, the Poles, Czechs and Georgians get along
perfectly well without vowels ;-)

On the other hand, various Polynesian languages seem to be
almost *all* vowels...

probably my favorite vowel system is the one in Russian
though...

Indeed. I believe the hawaiian alphabet uses only 16
letters, mostly vowels? or something like that. Explains
all the names:

Maui
Kauai
Honolulu
Aloha

I just like the pairing of the hard and soft vowels, which
makes the spelling much easier to understand. I also like
the uniqueness of "yeri", to keep things from being *too*
regular.
