Concept albums

I've really wanted to explore this notion of concept albums
- of music that tells a story. but my music won't have
lyrics - (maybe two or three tracks will have spoken word)
it's all very lo-fi style instrumentation right now, very
16-bit snes / megadrive-genesis sounding. a friend was
telling me that "only people who really love video games
will dig this."

so should i care? because i really don't. anyways, the album
is going to be two discs worth of music, in all types of
genre, and it looks like it will be about 30+ tracks the way
my progress is going right now.

so anyways, what's your favourite concept album? or are you
working on one?

well, about your album, who cares if only people who like
video game music will like it? are you really trying to get
rich and be popular making idm? (im assuming thats what it
is) so just make the music for yourself and fuck anybody
else

in terms of concept albums, ive gotta say tool's lateralus
is my favorite. that album just has so much emotional power
for me. dark side of the moon is number two for me i guess

Concept albums are very nice - there should be many, many
more of them instead of all those containing a mass of
randomly placed tracks. Its sort of conforting to have a
complete flowing album where the tracks are all connected by
some underlying idea. It makes it feel much more worth the
money. Anyway, "God in Three Persons" by The Residents is a
nice one.

The Microphones - Mt. Eerie

Oddioblender: You never said what your concept. For the
album.

But wait, aren't all albums concept albums?

would you really consider "does this look infected?" by sum
41 to be a concept album, or an album at all.... or even
something worth not burning?

hedphukker - couldn't have said it better myself! i would
like to at least be able to eat though. :D

wimp - the setting is averageland, and the protagonist is a
wash-up named average joe who fell from grace. the
antagonist is jack kankus, the founder/ceo of kankus
corporation, who was the kind of kid who was the class loser
at school - he is rich and powerful now, but still feels
empty inside.

kankus corporation creates androids - or synthetic humans as
many prefer to call them. well these androids eventually go
postal, and joe ends up getting involved in an effort to
stop them. of course he's a drunken bastard and is more
brawn than brain, so a girl named practical megan helps him.
they meet a hacker / thief named vladimir who tries to
decipher an android's AI as to why it went haywire and
started attacking humans.

before they can find the answer, a "Crisis containment team"
comes in to stop them. of course, our duo wins. they then
get an anonymous tip to "follow the electric arabian" and
end up following an android, built like a middle eastern
fellow, through the sewers, to Kankus Corp's android
manufacturing facility.

There, the duo meets and confront Mother - an AI created by
Kankus - however she escapes.

why? because she has realized her power to create. and
that's disc one, the rest is developing.

Atleast the good ones. Ones that capture something.

Like Cex's Being Ridden? Or Venetian Snares' Winter In The
Belly Of A Snake? Or Led Zeppelin's IV? Or The Soft Pink
Truth's Do You Party? Max Tundra's Mastered by Guy at The
Exchange? Matmos' A Chance To Cut Is A Chance To Cure? Pearl
Jam's Yield?

Mother is just a tentative name by the way - she's actually
referred to as the "mother of androids" - i will change the
name, as it is a rip from Mother (known as Earthbound in the
US)

The soundtracks to Phantasy Star IV, Super Mario RPG, Chrono
Trigger, Zero Wing, and Final Fantasy VI are my main
inspirations on this soundtrack.

Frankly I don't really see the point of making anything
except concept albums. Collections of singles and random
tracks don't flow well, have no real point, and usually seem
inconsistent, prodding listeners to make evaluations about
'favorite' tracks, etc. With concept albums, or
theme-oriented albums, there is less focus on tryingto make
individual tracks radio friendly and able to stand on their
own. Tracks aren't always meant to stand on their own.
They don't always have to tell a story per se, but sometimes
simply a comon theme can tie an album together very well.
All this being said, some favorite concept albums for me
include various Tangerine Dream recordings from the early
eighties. Sonic Youth's Daydream Nation and EVOL are also
very consistent in sound and feel producing very nice
effects. Nine Inch Nails' the Downward Spiral (yeah, I know
we've brought this up a million times) is also a very nice
narrative type concept album. There's a lot of works which
could be stretched to fit my criteria.. but I'll leave that
animal alone for now :).

Nubuo Umatsu. Videogame Composing Genius.

offline Oddioblender from Fort Worth, TX (United States) on 2003-10-21 19:29 [#00912910]
Points: 9601 Status: Lurker

wimp - yes, nubuo uematsu is THE fucking man. i ended up
making a thirteen-minute track with nothing but organs used
for melody, inspired by "Dancing Mad" (final boss theme from
FFVI)

uviol - yeah i really have been thinking about this a lot
lately. when i started listening to video game music again,
i started to realize that i wasn't listening just to
individual tracks, but the soundtracks as a whole. i wanted
to make something like this, where all the pieces fit.

but this is an age-old argument - the classic idea of
absolute music vs. program music

absolute music is JUST music absolute quite simple. it
serves no purpose or function other than the fact that it is
music.

program music serves a purpose, and usually is a series of
pieces used to convey a series of thoughts or ideas.

sorry - i'm pretty sure you know this already. :D

but i agree with you - btw, i own the vinyl copy of the
Tangerine Dream single "Warsaw in the Sun" - good stuff.

I've often thought about doing a weeks worth of news
stories. The main item on the show, with the newsreaders
vocals cut up and the music conveying how the peice made me
feel. My week in the news.

Maybe I will get around to it some day...I want to wait
until I feel I am at a level to do it justice.

Shit man, I remember only having their Remix Dys Temper and
thinking, hmm, this Last Rights album looks cool, let's
check it. After that, my Skinny Puppy Collection has
swelled: Last Rights, Remix Dys Temper, VIVIsectVI, Too Dark
Park, Cleanse Fold & Manipulate, Rabies, Mind: The Perpetual
Intercourese, and (the very KMFDMy) The Process.

Every outstanding album i've heard I would consider a
'concept album'. An album that just flows together and takes
you on an adventure. Ilkae's 'Pistachio Island' was a great
concept album despite it was 44 tracks to be played in
random mode.

Uematsu is great. I have the original sound versions of
Final Fantasy 3/6
and Crono Trigger. 3 cd's each. Nostalgic stuff.

i agree! it simply has to be a perfectly flowing album with
tracks put together in such a way that you NEVER feel like
skipping any of them... it doesn't have to have any 'story'
behind it, but it really has to be a kind of 'musical
voyage'... may be subjective, but that's how i feel.

for me personally 'Modus Operandi' by Photek will always be
a piece of perfection. so is 'Psalm 69' by Ministry.

also i put here 'Bright Size Life' by Pat Metheny & Jaco
Pastorius.

oh, and Gridlock's 'Trace'. except the final track
(Voiceless:Vcam Remix, which i don't like for sounding kind
of 'autechrish') it flows just perfectly! i even think that
may be initially they had a long track but than broke it
into separate pieces... at least that's the way it sounds (i
may be wrong tho :D)

there are more i guess, but these are that i think of right
now

I'm not really a huge fan of concept albums with a
continuous story... like The Wall or something... although
The Wall rules... but that type of concept album I feel is
pretty lame... overall...

I really like albums which have an overall concept, and the
songs talk about different facets of that concept... kind of
like Us by Peter Gabriel... the album is about
relationships, and each song talks about a different facet
of it... it's great... I guess Sea Change is like that to,
as it's about the break up of a relationship... as for
concept albums without words, it's obviously a hard thing to
accomplish... people say Snivilisation by Orbital is like a
concept album, but even that uses vocal samples to tie it
together... Passion by Peter Gabriel is a good example of
this for me though... I find this music tells a story by
itself... it takes me away, and I can create these images in
my head to fit the music perfectly... obviously it's
supposed to have a visual feel to it, but it's not dependant
on the movie, because I've never seen the movie and I still
love it... the good thing about this cd, and any cd like
this, is that it really sparkes visual imagery , and can
even have a bit of a story to it, but it's never the same...
it's all up to your imagination... but yeah, I love that cd
to death!

the residents - eskimo
the residents - the third reich'n'roll
radiohead - kid a
pink floyd - animals

i'm doing an avant-garde concept mini-album right now. it's
based up on some certain philosophical ideas, and the tones
for some melodies were chosen by their mathematical distance
to each other and were also put in a context to the
aforementioned ideas, same with the rhythms.
but nobody's gonna like it.

i have to say that i like concept albums. i think that's one
of the most important and difficult things to do on an
album, putting the songs together...

but i have to say that i haven't really encountered an album

now that i think of it, could Eno's works be considered

continuous concept.

there are some good recent (well relatively) concept albums,
if you have the ear for them
one more "mainstream", atleast in sound, one is deltron
3030, which is basically a concept album about both the
future and technology and has alot of sci fi themes and
such. i'm sure most people here have heard it already, but
i'm a bit late and i'm just now getting into it.
